Geo X: Statistics Project: Due Date – Tuesday June 7th

Student: ______

The following project will be included in the 4th marking period grade. You will research sports data on a topic that is interesting to you. The data must be from one variable (ex: football team’s rushing yards over two or more seasons) and have at least 30 values (you may have more, but not less.) Once you have your data, print it and show it to your teacher to be sure it will work for this project. You will report on the numerical summaries we have learned in class, create graphical displays of your data, and discuss your findings in a final summary.

You will choose one of the following formats to display your project:

§  Report format (printed and stapled together with a cover page.)

§  Powerpoint (sent electronically to your teacher)

Your project must have all of the following:

ü  Introduction

(Must include what the data is, how it was calculated, where you found it, what year it

was from, and why you chose it. This information should be typed.)

ü  Numerical Calculations:

§  Mean, Median, Mode

§  Standard Deviation

§  Range, IQR, Five Number Summary

(Every value should be neatly labeled. No work is necessary. This should be typed as part of your report or PowerPoint)

ü  Graphs:

§  Histogram

§  Box Plot

(Use the computer program, such as Fathom, Excel, R, or something similar, to generate the graphs and import them into your project.)

ü  Conclusion:

(This should be typed as well. Think about the distribution – skewed right or left, roughly symmetric – as it relates to your graphs and numeric calculations. Are there any unusual observations? If so, what are they? Did your distribution turn out the way you expected? Think about these and other possible trends to discuss in your conclusion. Be sure to discuss your conclusions in context – mention the variable!)

ü  Original Data included

(Do not retype it. For a report, staple the original data at the end. For a powerpoint, include the original data at the end.)

This project is worth 30 points on the 4th marking period. It is due by class (submitted in hard copy or electronically) by Tuesday June 7th. Late projects will result in a 20% per day reduction in points (one day late – 6 points, 2 days late 12 points, etc….)
