Qu’Appelle School of Mission & Ministry
An Introduction to the New Testament
Dean Pinter (PhD)
July 4th – 8th 2016
I. Course Description
The course is intended to introduce students to the content of the New Testament (NT) and examine the stories, letters and poetry of this “New Covenant.” While the emphasis will be on the message and contribution to theology made by the individual documents, the students will be encouraged to engage the meaning and implications of the NT for themselves.
II. Course Objectives
- To understand the content and shape of the NT books and their connecting themes.
- To begin to engage the meaning and implications of the NT for discipleship and mission in the 21st Century.
- To encourage devotional reading of the NT for every student.
- To assist students in preparing to preach & teach the NT.
III. Required Texts
The Books of the Bible, New International Version (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2012)
Gordon D. Fee & Douglas Stuart, How to Read the Bible Book by Book (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2014).
IV. Course Evaluation & Time Investment
- In Class – 25 hours
- Required Reading – 25 hours
Each student is asked to read the New Testament portion of both required textbooks (i.e., The Books of the Bible and How to Read the Bible Book by Book). Ideally, this should be done before the class begins since it will be difficult to do this during the week of class.
- Group Discussions – 5 hours
Each day, students will be asked to gather in small groups to discuss questions related to the day’s class material or in preparation for the following day’s class.
- Post-Course Assignment
Each student will choose one assignment from a list of topics which will be provided, or may pursue study in an area of interest following consultation with the Instructor. The assignment may be submitted electronically () or by post (c/o St. Aidan Anglican Church, 124 1st Ave NE, Moose Jaw, S6H 0Y8). The assignment is due by September 15th 2016. Assignments will be evaluated by the instructor and marked with a rubric indicating that the assignment is “Superior,” “Adequate,” or “Inadequate.” The assignment will be returned to the student and the mark submitted to Archdeacon Catherine Harper.
