Workshop: Stormwater LID/GI Planning and Evaluation

Dates: June 11-12, 2014

Location: Denver Metro region (exact location will be announced prior to workshop)

Cost: $250/person

Background:

The use of Green Infrastructure and Low Impact Development (GI/LID) practices for urban stormwater management is becoming more common in Colorado and throughout the US. GI/LID practices aim to manage stormwaterclose to the source to reduce overall site runoff. This workshop will include presentations and facilitated discussions on; 1)GI/LID policies and regulations, 2) existing barriers to successful GI/LID implementation and ways to break those barriers, 3) proper approaches to GI/LID design, installation and maintenance, 4) tools for evaluating GI/LID performance and 5) methods for estimating GI/LID life cycle costs and comparing costs to “traditional” stormwater management practices. Each afternoon, participants will break out into small, interdisciplinary groups to work on developing and evaluating a GI/LID strategy for a redevelopment site; providing participants with a “hands-on” learning experience.

Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants should be able to;

  • Discuss current and future policies and regulations pertaining to the use of GI/LID
  • Understand and compare the performance of different types of LID technologies
  • Understand the factors that affect the life cycle costs of different LID technologies
  • Understand the fundamentals of design of LID technologies to reduce the costs and efforts associated with LID maintenance
  • Complete a comprehensive site evaluation exercise for LID implementation

Audience: This workshop targets planners, managers, plan reviewers, landscape architects and others who may play a role in the planning, review and implementation of stormwater management plans. Note: This is not is a BMP/LID design level class.

Instructors:

Chris Olson, P.E. – Colorado Stormwater Center/Colorado State University

Andrew Earles, Ph.D, P.E., D.WRE – Wright Water Engineers

Computers: Participants are encouraged to bring laptops to use during the “hands-on” design and evaluation exercises. We cannot guarantee that charging outlets will be available for everyone, so please make sure your laptop is fully charged.
