2016-17 School Improvement Plan
CCRPI Goal:
To improve upon our current index score of 81.1 in 2015, specifically within the sub-groups of ELL, SPED, and Hispanic learners in all content areas.
SMART Goal:
  • The CCRPI score for Otwell will increase by a minimum of 5 points, including increasing the flag count for ED/EL/SWD meeting subgroup performance targets; currently at 6/12 = .5.
  • The percentage of students scoring at a Developing Learner or better on the Georgia Milestones ELA and Math will increase by at least 3%.

Actions, Strategies and Interventions
(Includes Prof. Learning Plan) / Impact on Student and Adult Behavior
(“If…then...” Statements) / Timeline / Resources Needed?
Who is Responsible?
OMS teachers will meet with their PLCs/Data Teams weekly to collaborate and plan for student instruction. / If our teachers regularly review student data and collaborate weekly to plan for instruction, then teaching and learning will be intentionally designed and targeted to meet the needs of all learners. / Wednesdays during first planning August through May / Classroom teachers will use data (i.e. EOG scores, GAMS resources, pre- and post-assessments, common assessments, observation) to collaborate and plan. OMS administrators will visit weekly PLCs to engage in the process with teachers.
OMS teachers will lead sessions and participate in professional learning via the EDcampmodel. The focus for professional learning will be STEAM centered to increase cross-curricular instruction and integrating problem/project-based tasks into daily learning. / If our teachers authentically participate and engage in EDcamp professional learning sessions, then our teachers will learn new tools and strategies to positively impact student growth, differentiate instruction, and personalize learning. / September 2016-May 2017 / Certified teachers
Describe how your SMART Goal will be monitored throughout the year:
  • Administrators will visit weekly PLC meetings with teachers at their designated grade level. (IRR, TI, and ELL teachers will meet independently and with content area teachers as needed to meet student needs.)
  • Department chairs will share out the work of their teams at leadership meetings.
  • Administrators will conduct TKES walkthroughs and formative observations to monitor implementation of differentiated and personalized learning tools.
  • RTI meetings will be conducted monthly for extended supervision of at-risk students.
  • Title I students will be progress monitored regularly with progress being shared with co-teachers and parents.

Academic / Instructional Goal:
OMS will complete year two of our three-year process to become a STEAM certified school.
SMART Goal:
The percentage of students scoring at a Developing Learner or better on the Georgia Milestones End of Course Physical Science for 8th grade will increase by at least 3%.
Actions, Strategies and Interventions
(Includes Prof. Learning Plan) / Impact on Student and Adult Behavior
(“If…then...” Statements) / Timeline / Resources Needed?
Who is Responsible?
OMS has a committee of teachers representing every content area and grade level, including the connections department, to lead the planning of cross-curricular instruction. / If our teachers engage in professional growth to plan cross-curricular instruction and applied learning project and problem-based learning, then we will develop student learners who are comfortable with the design process and STEAM learning. / STEAM committee meets bi-monthly from August 2016-May 2017 / Ms. Auburn Keaveney, AP, and Ms. Amie Holmes, STEAM teacher leader chair are the co-leaders of this initiative overseeing the certification process.
All teachers are involved in providing cross-curricular instruction.
The STEAM committee is actively pursuing grant money and building business partnerships to start a garden to table initiative. / If we seek external resources to support our mission to become a STEAM certified school, then we will be able to build a sustainable program with community involvement. / Ongoing / STEAM Committee and administrators
A committee with representatives from Whitlow ES, Cumming ES, OMS, and FCHS is being formed to create a K-12 garden to table initiative via STEAM applied learning for our feeder district. (A GOSA Planning grant application was submitted on August 15.) / If Cumming, Elementary, Whitlow Elementary, Otwell Middle, and Forsyth Central High collaborate to develop a K-12 garden to table initiative via STEAM applied learning, then we will be able to “brand” ourselves as a STEAM certified K-12 vertical family of schools. / Forsyth Central Vertical Team (FCVT) will meet monthly from September 2016-May 2017 / Teacher leaders from each of the feeder schools
Describe how your SMART Goal will be monitored throughout the year:
  • The STEAM committee will share progress reports for each content area and grade level at meetings.
  • We will use the rubrics for the AdvancED and GA DOE certifications to check off as we meet the requirements and highlight where we need to continue working.
  • Grant money will be used to purchase and install items requested to begin gardening and alternative growing methods (hydroponic, aeroponics, and terraponics). Teachers and students will begin using these resources as learning tools.
  • The FCVT will develop and share the vision, mission, and K-12 learning continuum for the applied learning STEAM garden to table initiative.

Climate Goal:
OMS will begin year two of implementing Dr. Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindsets. This will be intertwined with the STEAM certification process via cross-curricular instruction, applied learning, and problem and project-based learning.
SMART Goal:
Student grades will improve as students develop metacognitive and reflective skills, as well as persevere through completing problem-based learning through the design process and project/problem-based learning tasks.
Actions, Strategies and Interventions
(Includes Prof. Learning Plan) / Impact on Student and Adult Behavior
(“If…then…” Statements) / Timeline / Resources Needed?
Who is Responsible?
Teachers will integrate metacognitive and reflective thinking tasks in daily assignments and activities. / If teachers provideopportunities to students to reflect and analyze themselves as learners, then students will become active learners who are more invested in their own learning. / Ongoing / All staff
The STEAM Committee will work to integrate the design process, The Innovator’s Mindsets by George Couros, Dr. Dweck’s research, and other supplemental works into our STEAM initiative. / If teachers integrate problem-solving and the design process methods into learning activities, then students will begin to build resilience and mental stamina; resulting in increased student learning growth. / Ongoing / STEAM Committee Members
Describe how your SMART Goal will be monitored throughout the year:
  • Informal observations of teachers and conversations during PLCs about student learning.
  • Student growth shown via narrative responses on reflection assignments and activities.

Growth Measure for Teachers of Non-SGP Courses
Measure(s):
Otwell will use the school mean SGP from the Georgia Milestone EOGs and EOCs as the growth measure for teachers of non-SGP courses.
Implementation Plan:
OMS’s academic/instructional goal is to become a STEAM certified school by 2018. For teachers of non-SGP courses, the focus for student growth is to plan for cross-curricular instruction and applied learning as fits with the math, reading, and ELA classes.
  • In the spring of 2016, all content areas and grade levels completed a Google doc representing the scope and sequence of the school year in each class. The purpose is to allow teachers to see the general progression of the school year in order to find natural fits and realign the curriculum when possible to increase collaboration and integration of the entire curriculum.
  • Science and SS teachers will collaborate with math and ELA to teach technical literature, presentation skills, and math standards in their classes. (i.e. SS students will create graphs and charts to represent economic and historical information to apply math standards in the SS classroom.)
  • Connections teachers will collaborate with content area teachers to develop project-based and problem-based learning when and where they can in their courses. (i.e. Drama classes will create a stage set with correct ratio proportions as a project that will be graded in drama and math; using applied learning for students to see when, where, and how content is used in real-world scenarios.)

Continuous, Job-Embedded Professional Learning Plan
Professional Learning Goal(s):
OMS teachers will authentically engage in district level and school-based learning to grow as professionals.
