Gateway Checkpoints and Transition Assessments for the Master of Arts in Education Program
Admission to the M.A. Program
Assessments / Criteria- GPA and Course Grades
- Have completed a teacher education program from an institution accredited at least at the state and regional level.
- Have attained a baccalaureate cumulative gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale.
- Have completed one year of teaching.
- Professional Judgments
- Submit three references from qualified professionals affirming appropriateness for graduate study.
- Complete an application process that includes a personal interview and a writing sample.
Continuation in the M.A. Program
- GPA and Course Grades
- Maintain a 3.00 GPA in all coursework taken for graduate credit with no more than 6 semester hours of “C” work.
- A graduate student on probation who is not restored to good academic standing by the end of two semesters following the term in which the cumulative grade point average fell below 3.00 will be declared ineligible to enroll.
- While on probation, a graduate student must achieve a 3.00 term grade point average in order to enroll in another term.
- A graduate student on probation will not be restored to good standing until a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 is achieved in graduate work completed at Wittenberg.
- In the case of loss of eligibility following academic probation, the graduate student may present a petition to the Director of Graduate Studies in Education to explain any extenuating circumstances affecting their performance. The petition will be reviewed and acted upon by the Education Department faculty.
Approval of Thesis Proposal
- GPA and Course Grades
- Have completed required core courses EDUC 550, 560, 570, 590, 595.
- Thesis Committee Recommendation
- Have satisfactorily completed a thesis proposal signed by the thesis committee and the Director of the Graduate Program.
Completion of Degree Requirements
- GPA and Course Grades
- Have successfully completed EDUC 600 – Directed Research.
- Have successfully completed the program in effect at the time of admission with a minimum of 36 semester hours.
- Have earned at least a 3.00 GPA in total work completed with no more than 6 hours of “C” work permitted for a degree.
- Have completed all degree requirements within a 6-year period from the date of admittance to the program.
- Thesis Committee Recommendation
- Have successfully written and defended a research project as outlined in the program.
