8th Grade Glimpse

Counselors Corner: 8th grade- MAP assessments for the middle school will take place April 25th- May 6th. Make ups will take place the week after. It is important that every effort be made for student attendance during the testing sessions.
8th Grade Social Studies: We are continuing our study of the causes, battles, and impact of the American Civil War.
8th Grade Science: We will finish our Astronomy unit as we go over our tests on the Sun. We will then begin the process of reviewing information in preparation for taking the MAP test. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Pre-Algebra: We will continue the unit on multiple step equations next week. Students will be able to solve a system of equations by substitution. There will be a quiz on Thursday (G1) and Friday (B2 and B4) over equations and systems of equations.
Algebra 1: We will continue the unit on exponents and polynomials next week. Students will be able to evaluate rational exponents. There will be a quiz on Thursday over rational and integer exponents.

8th Grade Communication Arts: Reading/Writing: Over the next several weeks we will be reading and writing poetry. Grammar: Working with adjectives. Spelling: Blue day classes: packets due on Monday test on Wednesday. Writing Project: Blue 5 and new students – A.R. writing project is due by Friday, May 6. Projects turned in by April 29 earn 5 points extra credit. A.R.: Reading logs are due: April 1, 15, 29; May 13. Students must meet 50 % of their A.R. Goal by Thursday, April 14 and 100% of their A.R. goal by Friday, May 13. Vocal Music: Students are preparing for the Middle School Spring Choir Concert. It will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the East Gym.
8th Grade Band: Mark your calendars for our Spring Concert which will take place on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00pm. The students have been working hard to prepare our concert music, and they are doing a great job. We are also in the process of putting together a percussion ensemble which will meet from 3:00-4:30 on Thursdays starting April 7th. This group will work on music which includes only percussion instruments and will perform their piece on the spring concert. Any percussion student may attend. 8th Grade-Exploring Agriculture: - Mr. Brock: This week we will conclude Unit 3: Animals in Our Society. Students will gain knowledge of various livestock species and how they influence our country’s economy. Our next unit is Ag mechanics. Our project for this unit will be a tool box. Power and Construction: This week the 8th graders will be reviewing rules and techniques for operating the power tools they will use in shop. They also are searching for the perfect plan s for a shelf project for each student to build. 8th Physical Education and Health: Next week students in both classes will be completing their final fitness tests of the year. We hope to see improvement in all areas from the first quarter's results. Remind students to bring clothes to dress out. 8th Grade RISE: Students will be working on completing their Independent Study Projects. The Rube Goldberg team will be double checking all work for their final submission. Mrs. Bell, Conference Time: BLUE 5 (1:36-2:45)
8th Grade Computer Literacy: Students will continue to focus on the whole keyboard.They will continue to learn about Microsoft Excel. Pivot Tables and What-If Analysis will be their focus. They will have a quiz over Excel on Wednesday and then begin a new Excel project that will require them to use formulas. Mrs. Bell, Conference Time: BLUE 5 (1:36-2:45)
8th Grade Art: The students in this class have taken a bit longer on their portraits of people than planned. They will all transfer their portrait of a person to final paper when they return from break. Then they will begin the illustration of the person to appear life like and three dimensional.
Graphics I: The students in graphics class will continue multimedia presentations with peers participating in class critiques over their presentations.
Graphics II: The students in Graphics II will prepare display boards for their business advertisements.

8th FACS: Students will be beginning their cooking unit. They will be making homemade pizza rolls. Students not in the labs will be working on measurement worksheets.
Food Science: The students will be discussing fats and how it is used with food. Students will be participating in a lab which incorporates using different forms of fat to cook.
