Field of Study

Byzantine Studies

Byzantine Studies comprises history, culture and the language of the Eastern Roman Empire. This This [RH1]empire existed from the late Classical Ancient World to the end of the Middle Ages, that is, from the 4th century A.D. through the 15th century.
G 4th century A.D.. through the 15th century. Geographically, t[RH2]he Eastern Roman Empire geographically included the eastern Mediterranean area and adjacent regions, especially Asia Minor, Greece and the Balkans Balkan[RH3]s. The centre of this region was Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, which in former times was also called Eastern Rome or Byzanz Byzanz[RH4]. On the one hand, Byzantine Studies is focused [RH5]on linguistics and literary studies. And on the other, it emphasises the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire, which emerged from the eastern part of the declining Roman Empire in ancient times. Students of Byzantine Studies try to explain the contemporary in historical processes in the Balkan region, in Asia Minor and in the Middle East on the basis of medieval developments and those of early modern times. They elucidate the relations between [RH6]the history of religion and the humanities as well as between the oriental and occidental worlds. As a subject of linguistics and literary studies Byzantine Studies is also concerned with the [RH7]Greek language and the literature of the post classical epoch through the Middle Ages and until the beginnings of the modern Greek language and culture. Art History of the Eastern Roman Empire is taught at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in the Department of Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History.
