Upward Bound – Student Employment Positions

Upward Bound
UPWARD BOUND TUTOR: Class II
The student will provide academic assistance to Upward Bound participants in grades 9 - 12 in a variety of subject areas during our regular after school tutoring hours (from 3:00 – 5:00pm) or evening hours (6:00 – 8:00pm). The tutor will observe student work habits, provide positive and constructive feedback to students with their homework, challenge students with appropriate questions to spark critical thinking, assure a positive learning environment for all those in the tutoring room, and build professional relationships with students. Student must be capable in one or more of the following academic areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science, foreign language or social studies.
UPWARD BOUND SENIOR MENTOR:Class II
The student will provide specialized assistance to Upward Bound high school seniors with their college preparation process. This includes assisting with online college applications, prepping students for the ACT/SAT, editing essays, helping them with the scholarship search and financial aid process. The mentor will be assigned a few students to work with one-on-one, follow up on student progress and report to the Assistant Director about their observations. Evening hours, weekly, 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
UPWARD BOUND OFFICE ASSISTANT: Class II
The UB Office Assistant is responsible for assisting the UB Program Assistant with clerical needs relating to the Upward Bound grant. This position assists with documentation, database design, mailings and the website upkeep. Hours occur during the day from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.
UPWARD BOUND NIGHT TUTORING COORDINATOR:Class III
This position provides organization and oversight to the Upward Bound evening tutors and tutoring program. The individual will supervise tutors and student participants, oversee tutoring area to insure a safe and positive learning environment, and work with the Academic Coordinator to submit all tutoring hours and attendance. Evenings, 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Upward Bound is looking for students who are experienced in teaching, peer tutoring, mentoring, and demonstrate a potential for leadership. Upward Bound looks at the following factors when hiring a staff:

GPA (Must be 2.75 or higher)
Experience working with youth

Personality
Extracurricular activities
