Tools and equipment required.
· Large drop sheet/s ( To protect flooring and plantation shutter during installation)
· Box cutter.
· Pencil.
· Tape measure.
· Cordless drill.
· Large flat blade screw driver.
· Rubber hammer or small length of softwood/pine padded with a clean rag.
· 2.5mm drill bit for pilot hole
· 8mm drill bit for counter sink
· Phillips head driver (For cordless drill)
· Gap-filler with dispenser nozzles
· Corking gun.
· Rags.
· Vacuum cleaner.
· 15 x 45mm - 50mm wood screws (Supplied).
· Large rubbish bags.
· Broom / dust pan
· Spirit level
1. UNPACKING AND SORTING - Choose an unpacking area such as a garage to unpack and sort your shutter/s. We do not recommend you unpack inside the house. Read your order sheet and identify the shutter for the window you are going to install. There will be a separate longer box for the frame, check label on the frame to determine you have the correct item. Lay items out and recheck once out of the box. Note - We recommend only unpacking shutters as required, this will avoid mixing up frames and shutter panels.
2. WINDOW PREPAREATION - Clear a path through the house and lay a large drop sheet directly below selected window. Remove any existing blinds, curtains or obstructions and wipe clean widow frame with domestic cleaner. ( This will ensure gap-filler adheres to your window frame)
3. SHUTTER FRAME CONSTRUCTION - Starting with the shutter frame, determine top, bottom, left and right sides of frame. Check hinges are positioned correctly. Lay frame upside down onto drop sheet and recheck frame top, bottom, left and right sides. With a pencil mark all sides. Align frame with male and female key and gently slide into position keeping frame at right angles. You may have to gently tap down framing using the rubber hammer/ padded soft wood. Repeat until all four sides are constructed.
4. SHUTTER FRAME INSTALLATION - Carefully lift shutter frame onto window and sit shutter frame flush with window frame. Assistance may be required to lift and hold frame into position. Check hinges are positioned correctly (on the outside of frame).With a pencil, mark 150mm from each corner on the high side of frame and then centres. Twelve (12) screws each frame will be required. Frames over 1200mm will require sixteen (16) screws. Drill pilot hole with 2.5mm drill bit on high side of frame in pencil marked position in middle top frame. Insert 50mm long screw until it bites, do not screw flush. This screw is only temporary to hold frame into position while the rest of the pilot holes are drilled. Drill pilot holes around frame in marked positions with 2.5mm drill bit ensuring you drill through shutter frame and into existing window frame at least by 10mm. If in doubt place screw against drill bit and mark depth with electrical tape or white marker on drill bit if drill does not have a depth gauge. You may wish to do a test drill into a piece of wood to determine the drilling depth. Once all pilot holes have been drilled, using the 8mm drill bit, drill 5mm depth into frame for a counter sink. Once again, you may wish to do a test drill into a piece of wood to determine the countersink drilling depth. Install all 12 screws (16 screws for frames greater than 1500mm in length). Do not drive screws flush!! Leave screws protruding approximately 10mm to enable adjustment after shutter panels have been hung. Using a level, check frame sides top, bottom and left / right hand sides of shutter frame.
5. INSTALLATION OF SHUTTER PANELS – Determine the correct shutter panel and remove hinge pins. Place shutter into frame, keeping shutter panel open and align hinges. (Assistance may be required to hold shutter panel). Slide hinge pins through hinge. Slight pressure to opposing hinges may be required to align hinges, some hinge pins may require a slight tap by placing a flat blade screw driver on the hinge pin head and gently tapping with soft wood. Repeat with opposite shutter panel if required. Check to ensure panels and louvres are operating correctly.
6. ADJUSTMENT OF PANELS – Close shutter panels and check panels are square when closing. Screw frame diagonally opposite to square panel shutters. Drive all screws 5mm below surface of frame, checking closure of the panels between each screw. Ensure screwing in an opposite and diagonal direction as shown in diagram below.
7. SEALING GAPS – Using gap-sealer with corking gun. Cut nozzle at a 45 degree angle similar to the width of the gap. Slowly fill in gap between shutter frame and widow frame. Using a damp rag, clean and smooth off excess gap filler. Fill screw holes with gap filler and clean and smooth of excess gap filler. Close shutter louvres and gently wipe down. Carefully remove drop sheets ensuring no gap filler marks floors, remove and discard of your rubbish responsibly.
