Course Objective: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)

(1)  Communication: The students communicate in a language other than English using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

(2)  Cultures: The students gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.

(3)  Connections: The students use the language to make connections with other subject areas and to acquire information.

(4)  Comparisons: The students develop insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing the students’ own language and culture to another.

(5)  Communities: The students participate in communities at home and around the world by using languages other than English.

Course Textbook: Realidades Spanish Level 1, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2005

Course Content:

Semester 1 – pronunciation, basic greetings, weather expressions, present tense of –ar, -er, -ir verbs, numbers, describing school schedules and subjects, foods and describing nouns with adjectives, days of the week, months of the year.

Semester 2 –talking about one’s community, describing families, ordering in a restaurant, parts of a house, household chores, shopping and prices, present progressive tense, stem-changing verbs. Culture: Spanish-speaking countries/USA

-  Required: 1” Binder (clear cover), dividers, loose-leaf paper, pens/pencils, hole-puncher, 4X6 index cards.

-  Recommended: Spanish/English Dictionary- (We do have some at school, however if you don’t want to have to share, then you may wish to purchase your own.) Black Chisel Expo dry marker.

¨  Discipline

-  Infraction of handbook rules: student will be written up on behavioral referral form and sent to his/her assistant principal.

-  Academic dishonesty (cheating on tests, copying another person’s class work) is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.
