COURSE DESCRIPTION
Honors Algebra 2 demands a more challenging approach to the students’ continued study of advanced algebraic concepts including functions, polynomials, rational expressions, systems of functions and inequalities, and matrices. This course is designed for students who have demonstrated an advanced level of interest and achievement in mathematics. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Emphasis should be placed on high order thinking skills that impact practical and increasingly complex applications, modeling, and algebraic proof. Students will be provided multiple opportunities to take greater responsibility for their learning. *Appropriate technologywill be used regularly for instruction and assessment.
PREREQUISITES
- Operate with matrices to solve problems.
- Create linear models, for sets of data, to solve problems.
- Use linear functions and inequalities to model and solve problems.
- Use quadratic functions to model problems and solve by factoring and graphing.
- Use systems of linear equations or inequalities to model and solve problems.
- Graph and evaluate exponential functions to solve problems.
GRADING POLICY
Grades will be based on demonstrated mastery of concepts and development of skills. Please use parent assist to keep up with grades.
The following grading system will be used to determine quarter grades:
Grading Scale: A 93-100B 85-92C 77-84D 70-76 F Below 70
Quarter Grading: Tests50%
Quarter Test10%
Quizzes20%
CW/HW10%
Projects10%(1 per quarter)
The final grade will be averaged as follows:
1st Semester 37.5% 2nd Semester 37.5% Final Exam 25%
(average of Q1 and Q2) (average of Q3 and Q4)
ASSIGNMENTS
A monthly calendar will be used to assign homework, tests, and announced quizzes. Please follow this calendar and keep it in the front of your notebook. It will also be posted on my teacher website and on the bulletin board in the room. Homework is to be completed daily on notebook paper in pencil. Notebooks are expected to be kept and may be checked periodically during each quarter.
MAKE-UP POLICY
It is your responsibility to get your make-up work. You have five days to make up any graded work, if the work is not completed within 5 school days the grade will become a zero. All make-up work can be located in the labeled bins on the table in the front of the room.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
Notebook (3-ring binder), loose leaf paper, graph paper, straight-edge,calculator (TI-83/83 or TI-84/84 plus), AAA batteries and pencils.
