5th EPNS Research Meeting
Dear colleagues
We are very pleased to invite you to the 5th Research Conference of the EPNS this time taking place in Essen one of the most vibrant cities in the Ruhr area. We will meet from 28th to 29th of October 2016 in the Centre for Learning and Teaching, Virchowstraße in Essen, near the University Hospital Essen hoping that this environment will stimulate international collaborations and research in Pediatric Neurology.
We will start our meeting with a plenary session focussing on two diverse topics: the role of imaging in the field of pediatric neurology and career aspects of young colleagues.
The first key note lecture given by Nicole Wolf will be devoted to the ever expanding role of imaging in the field of pediatric neurology. Special focus will be given on new techniques and the role of imaging as a biomarker or predictor of disease progression in the different area. As in previous meetings there will be 9 different working groups: Ataxia, Autoimmune-Inflammatory diseases, Developmental Neurology, Epilepsy,Movement disorders, Neonatal Neurology, Neurodegeneration and Neuroprotection, Neurometabolic diseases, Neuromuscular diseases and Pedatric Stroke.
Here, we would in particular like to invite new colleagues to join our meeting and to bring up ideas for other working groups!
We plan that every working group should present recent advances in the field of imaging in the Saturday morning sessions affecting their respective area in addition to other ongoing collaborative projects.
The second topic focuses on career aspects of young colleaguesin the Pediatric Neurology field. Since the 1980s, a growing proportion of women is recorded on all levels of qualification in the area of human medicine. Currently, more than 60 % of medical students are female. Nevertheless, gender-specific vertical segregation continues: The proportion of women decreases with rising qualification and position. While women and men in medical disciplines almost equally participate from the beginning of their studies to their medical and doctoral degree (e.g. PhD), women get lost in the scientific system on the way to a successful career. Although these hurdles seem to be more problematic for female colleagues it also becomes a growing problem in young male colleagues. Therefore it is time to offer “new” opportunities to improve the work – life balance,this means not to decide for family or work and career and this for both, young females and males. In the past ten years, mentoring programmes have been established at many medical faculties in Germany to promote the career of young scientists. The mentoring programmes include individual advice by experienced mentors, a seminar programme to acquire scientific key competences and mainly the creation of scientific networks. The first keynote lecture will focus on the possibilities for combining family, work and career in the scientific system. In a second presentation the mentoring programme ‚MediMent‘ which has been successfully implemented for the past ten years at the medical faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen will be presented.

We strongly encourage that in particular junior pediatric neurologist participate actively in preparation of the workshop including the presentation of a research project in the respective working groups. On the homepage of the EPNS and GNP more detailed programs of the different working groups will be presented and updated on a regular base as the information is provided by the chairs of the working group.
