Bexley High School’s New Dual Enrollment Program

Partnering with Columbus State Community College

What is dual enrollment?

Dual enrollment enables a student to earn high school and college credit concurrently.

The classes are taught by Bexley HS teachers who have met the criteria for adjunct professor status (Master’s Degree in their content area). The high school curriculum is aligned to the college course. Therefore, students never have to leave our high school to start earning college credit.

Who is eligible?

Student in grades 10-12 who carry a grade point average of 3.0 or above and are “College Ready” are eligible to apply for any dual enrollment course. College ready can be defined as 18/English, 22/Math, and 24/Science ACT scores; 490/Writing, 500/Critical Reading, and 515/Math on the SAT; or the equivalent score on the Compass Test. The Compass Test is an on-line test that we can administer at BHS for students that have not taken the ACT Test.

How is College Readiness determined for courses?

The pre-requisites for all courses can be found online at: http://www.cscc.edu/academics/courses/ or they are also listed in the course bulletin. For most courses an 18 on the ACT English section; a 490 on the SAT Writing AND a 500 on the Critical Reading; a COMPASS Test placement into ENGL 1100 demonstrates College Readiness. For math and science courses such as Physics a 22 on the Math component of the ACT; a 515 on the math component of the SAT; or a COMPASS Test placement into MATH 1148 or Math 1113. The pre-requisites for all courses can be found online at: http://www.cscc.edu/academics/courses/

How much does it cost?

Costs for the BHS dual enrollment is $25 per semester hour. Checks should be made payable to BHS and we will submit payment to CSCC. Once the published semester CSCC withdrawal deadlines have passed Dual Enrollment tuition is non-refundable.

Are Dual Enrollment courses transferable to other colleges and universities?

Yes. The credit you receive for your DE course is the same as if you had taken that class on Columbus State’s campus. All TAG courses approved through the Ohio Board of Regent’s Articulation and Transfer Policy will be accepted at all of Ohio’s public colleges and universities. However, if you are applying to an out of state or to a private institution it is important to note that it is up to the receiving institution as to how they will transfer in credit and apply it toward your degree program. You are encouraged to check with your out of state or private institution regarding transferring in your CSCC credits. Note: Foreign& American Sign Language are currently not TAG courses.

May I take a dual enrollment class but not sign up for college credit?

Yes, you have the option of taking a dual enrollment class for the rigor. Dual Enrollment students and students not seeking CSCC credit will sit in the same classroom and be exposed to the same rigorous coursework. Typically the courses we offer are freshman level courses at Columbus State Community College.

How does this change content? Is it “fair” that some students only for high school credit while others college? Are there unnecessary expectations for those not seeking credits?

Our content will not change very much. Our teachers have taken a preliminary look at the syllabus for each course to ensure there is a close alignment. There may need to be a little adjusting, but it will not be a major change. Our work last year of aligning our courses to the ACT College Readiness Standards helped with this.

What if I am enrolled in more than one CSCC class at my high school?

Complete only one CSCC Enrollment Form and turn it in to one of your teachers. However, you must list each class for which you want to receive college credit on the Enrollment Form.

What is the difference between dual enrollment and Advanced Placement?

Both of these options carry college credit. To earn college credit for an Advanced Placement class, a student must take a national AP exam in May and score at a certain level to earn college credit. Dual enrollment credit is based on daily performance and testing conducted in the classroom. A student must earn a “C” or higher grade to accrue college credit. Advanced Placement is the golden apple when colleges look at transcripts. However, the tests are very challenging. We strongly encourage all students to take as many Honors, AP, and DE classes as possible to be college and career ready.

Are dual enrollment classes weighted?

Presently, there is no change in our policy. This could change in the future. For now, class weighting will not be different. Unlike AP and Honors classes, dual enrollment classes are not weighted at BHS. However, all of them prepare you for college and assist in the college selection process.

Which grading scale will be used? Bexley or CSCC?

We will use our grading scale for our report card and CSCC will use our percentage to calculate their grade. For example, a 92% at BHS equates to an A-, but since CSCC ‘s policy states that 90-100% equates to an A the students CSCC transcript will show an A while our grade card will show an A-.

Which policies will be used? Bexley or CSCC?

CSCC policies will be used for students enrolled in the DE Program. For example, CSCC has a minimum attendance requirement and forbids retakes on all summative assessments. CSCC timeline and due dates are non-negotiable.

Will there be two report cards? Bexley and CSCC?

Only report card will be Bexley. Students can only access course grade and transcripts through CSCC.

Are CSCC Dual Enrollment courses transferrable to other colleges and universities?

Yes. The credit you receive for your Dual Enrollment courses is the same as if you had taken that class on Columbus State’s campus. Most courses offered BHS are guaranteed to transfer to all Ohio public universities and colleges. These courses are referred to as “TAG” courses. However, if you are transferring out of state or to a private institution it is important to note that it is up to the receiving institution as to how they will transfer in credit and apply it towards your degree program. You are encouraged to check with your transfer institution regarding transferring in your CSCC credits. However, showing you are able to handle college level work while in high school will better prepare you for college and heighten your odds for college admission. For more specific information, go to www.transfer.org or directly contact colleges of interest.

What are the benefits of Dual Enrollment?

Bottom line…

Dual enrollment saves you time and money—two equally valuable commodities. For example, a BHS student can take a dual enrollment class for $75-$100 that could cost over $2000 for the exact class on a college campus. Other benefits are that you enter college above the beginning freshman status. This can allow you to schedule ahead of other freshmen, study abroad sooner, or double major. And of course, you can graduate from college in less than four years if you plan accordingly.

Our district’s mission is to effectively and efficiently provide learning opportunities that challenge all students to realize their maximum potential. Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment programs parallel that educational mission. Our goal is for each senior to graduate with 12-15 hours of college credit earned through AP Test scores, Dual Enrollment, or PSEO. We want to keep our able learners and leaders engaged in activities on our high school campus. We want to help students be “college ready” even if they are not “college bound”. We applaud our students for accepting the challenge of accelerated coursework, and we appreciate our teachers for offering these classes!

Will BHS transcripts look different?

Our transcripts will remain the same. Students will need to also request CSCC transcripts.

How do I request an official college transcript for my CSCC course work?

Once your high school course is completed and grades have been submitted by your high school teacher you can request an official transcript from the Columbus State Records and Registration Office. This request must be done in writing. A transcript request form can be found on the Columbus State website at www.cscc.edu by typing in “transcript request” in the search bar. Official transcripts are $2.00 each.
