SUMMER SCHOOLS 2010
Information
The National Portrait Gallery invites applications from Teachers of Art and Design on behalf of their students, and directly from young people aged 14 – 19, to participate in the BP Portrait Award: Next Generation Summer Schools on 9 – 11 August or 23 – 25 August 2010.
Who:
- 14 to 19 year olds from London boroughs, including:
- Young people who are interested in art
- Secondary School Art and Design students
- Secondary School Gifted and Talented students
- We encourage applications from young people aged 14 – 19 from the five host boroughs of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games: Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Greenwich
What:
- Two intensive three-day workshops exploring creative approaches to portraiture
- Working with professional artists, including past BP Portrait Award winning artists, and the Gallery’s specialist team of artists and teachers.
- Developing skills, working in a wide range of media including painting and drawing from life, meeting other young people interested in portraiture
- Generating a body of work through a series of workshops, presentations, demonstrations and ‘ice-breaker’ activities
- Viewing and responding to BP Portrait Award 2010, and portraits in the Gallery’s Collection
- Summer Schools are part ofBP Portrait Award: Next Generation, a 3-year project inspired by 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, encouraging 14 – 19 year olds to become involved in portraiture through the BP Portrait Award. For further information see under BP Portrait Award: Next Generation.
When:
- There are two Summer Schools: Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 August and Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 August, both from 10.30am – 15.30pm
- Applicants should indicate which Summer School they are interested in attending
Where:
- Education Studio and Galleries, National Portrait Gallery, St Martin’s Place, London WC2H 0HE
Cost:
- FREE
- All art materials and lunch provided.
Applications:
- Entry is by Application Form (see attached) and the Artist Statement will be a key part of the selection process
- There are 15 places per Summer School (30 places in total across both events)
- At least 5 places for applicants from Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Waltham Forest and Greenwich
- Two places maximum per school or community organisation
- Applications should be emailed to with the email heading BP Portrait Award: Next Generation Summer School Application or posted to Learning Department, National Portrait Gallery, St Martin’s Place, London
WC2H 0HE and marked BP Portrait Award: Next Generation Summer School Application
- Please complete the attached Application Form and return to National Portrait Gallery by 5.00pm, Monday 26 July*DEADLINE NOW EXTENDED TO5.00PM FRIDAY 30 JULY*.
- Participants will be informed of their place by Tuesday 3 August
Please note:
- Applicants must commit to attending all three days of the Summer School
- Applicants may only attend one Summer School (block of three days)
- Summer Schools will be photographed and filmed
- Participants, teachers, families and sponsors will be invited to a Presentation to view of works produced at the Summer Schools on Wednesday 25 August at 4.30pm
