South Dakota Home School Students
Overview:
Dual credit is an opportunity for high school students in South Dakota who meet admissions standards to enroll in public postsecondary institutions in South Dakota andsimultaneously earn credits for both their high school diploma and postsecondary degree or certificate.
Dual credit courses are offered by the postsecondary institution’s faculty members, are governed by the postsecondary institution’s policies, and follow the postsecondary institution’s established processes for admissions, registration, billing and grade reporting.
Coursework is available to South Dakota students in grades 11-12 at the rate of $40 per credit. Students are responsible for the cost of the course credits and any required textbooks or related course materials.
Students are able to take a number of classes, including general education and career and technical education courses. The student’s parent/legal guardian must agree that the dual credit coursework will be recorded for the purposes of awarding a home school diploma and used to calculate academic standing.
In order to participate in the dual credit program, the home school family, identified below, agrees to the following:
- Participation in this program will be limited to students in grades 11-12.
- The student’s parent/legal guardian agrees to have an approved waiver of exemption on file with their local school district (which the district then files with the South Dakota Department of Education). A student without an approved waiver of exemption is unable to register until the waiver has been approved and filed with the South Dakota Department of Education for the academic year this agreement pertains to.
- The student’s parent/legal guardian agrees to recordgrades from the dual credit coursework on the student’s high school transcript and to use the coursework to calculate academic standing.
- Once the signed MOU has been received and processed by the South Dakota Department of Education, the student’s parent agrees to register a student for dual credit courses through the identified single point of contact at each postsecondary institution.
- The home school family acknowledges students must meet postsecondary enrollment requirements in order to register for a course.
- The student’s parent/legal guardian will monitor student progress in the dual credit course(s) the student is enrolled in.
- The student’s parent/legal guardian shall submit a written form to the State indicating student name, course, and semester score for each dual credit course under this Agreement. These reports shall be submitted on or before January 30, 2015 for the fall semester and on or before June 15, 2015 for the spring semester.
