What is drama? / Drama is a kind of literature that is written to be performed by actors for an audience.
What are the types of Drama? / Types of drama includes:
*Stage plays
*Radio plays
*Movies
*TV programs
How are dramas different from other types of literature? / Like short stories, novels, and other fiction, the purpose of drama is to tell a story. However, in a drama, the plot and characters are developed primarily through dialogue and action.
What are the five basic elements of literature? / Plot- the series of related events that make up a story. What it is about! (Plot includes: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, & resolution)
Conflict- the struggle between the main character(s) and another character or opposing force. It can also be the character's struggle with themselves, like making a decision.
Setting- the time and place where the story occurs. Many stories have multiple settings
Character- a person or animal that is in a play or story
Dialogue- the words a character speaks
What are the five special elements of Drama? / Stage Directions- written instructions on how the actors should move and behave
Scenes- a section of a play in which all of the events occur in one setting (place and time)
Monologue- a speech in which a character speaks to a silent or absent listener about emotions
Soliloquy- a special monologue where the character is alone on stage and reveals what they are thinking or feeling to the audience
Aside- when a character makes a brief remark to either the audience or another character that the other characters on stage can't hear
Why is Plot important? / Drama needs a strong plot because it usually does not have a narrator to help the audience understand what is going on.
What are the Plot Stages in Drama? / Exposition- introduces the characters and setting. It may also give hints, or forshadow, the main conflict or problem in the story
Rising Action- builds suspense and shows how the conflict becomes complicated
Climax- the most emotional or suspenseful moment, usually when the main character makes a decision or action that affects the outcome of the story.
Falling Action- reveals the outcome of the story's climax, the consequences
Resolution- finishes the story by tying up loose ends and may give a moral.
What are the different ways characters speak in drama? / Dialogue- a conversation between two or more characters
Monologue- a long speech made by one character. This includes soliloquy and asides.
What is the purpose of stage directions? / Stage directions are a playwright's written instructions about how a play should look when it is performed. Stage directions explain how actors should move and behave and how they should say their lines (eg. with sadness). They also explain how the stage should look and where props (items used in the play) are used.
