Online resource 1. Parameters of the exponential + constant model fitted to the axial profile of the root absorbing power for Cd2+ uptake by first order lateral roots of sunflower. The root absorbing power (RP, L cm-2 s-1) was RP=ae-bx+c, where x is the distance to the root apex (cm) and a, b, c are the model parameters. The parameters were estimated by fitting the model to experimental data of Cd2+ uptake in first order lateral roots of 10-12 leaves sunflower plants exposed to 109Cd labelled solutions at varying Cd concentrations (n=28).
a (L cm-2 s-1) / 1.1 10-7 / 0.19 10-7
b (cm-1) / 0.20 / 0.023
c (L cm-2 s-1) / 5.0 10-8 / 0.40 10-8
