Meet Will and AliceLife was very difficult for poor people in England in the past.
Meet Will and his sister, Alice. They lived in England many years ago. Their family was very poor and they started to work when they were five years old. Their family needed the money from their jobs to buy food and clothes.
Alice worked in a factory. She wanted to go to school and learn how to read and write, but she worked from 5 o’clock in the morning until 9 o’clock at night. That’s 16 hours a day! She didn’t even look out of the window. She worked hard all day.
Alice’s brother Will, was a chimney cleaner (מנקה ארובות / عامل مداخن). He also worked many hours every day. Sometimes he went onto the roofs (גגות / أسطح) of the houses and climbed down the chimneys. It was hard and dangerous. Will’s clothes were always black from the dirt.
Alice and Will weren’t happy children. They didn’t have fun and do the things children do today.
