You may copy and paste the above questions into your hardcopy survey. This version does not include branching of genderqueer identities. Also, this method differs from the original versions of the so-called two-step method because this method explicitly includes “genderqueer” as a response option. As both Tate, Lebdetter, and Youssef (2013) and Kuper, Nussbaum, and Mustanski (2012) found, “genderqueer” comprises approximately half of all transgender spectrum (i.e., trans*) responses. Thus, researchers will lose approximately half of their trans* response data if they do not include “genderqueer” as a response option.

Scoring/Data Organization:

In order to determine cisgender and transgender spectrum profiles, you may follow these steps below:

Cisgender Profiles (cis women, cis men)

Cis is Latin for “on the same side.” Thus, cisgender profiles are the same responses to the two questions.

Profile / Current Identity Question / Birth-Assigned Category Question
Cis woman / Female / Female
Cis man / Male / Male

Binary Transgender Profiles (trans women, trans men)

Trans is Latin for “across or beyond.” Thus, binary transgender profiles are different responses to the two questions—but only the responses that exclude genderqueer.

Profile / Current Identity Question / Birth-Assigned Category Question
Trans woman / Female / Male
TransgenderFemale / Male
Transgender Male* / Male*
Trans man / Male / Female
Transgender Male / Female
Transgender Female** / Female**

*In some of our research, we have found that newly identifying trans women will use this response pattern.

**In some of our research, we have found that newly identifying trans men will use this response pattern.

For an explanation of why we use a space between trans and the gender category see:

Non-Binary Transgender Profiles (Genderqueer Individuals)

Non-binary transgender profiles are different responses to the two questions—but only the responses that include “genderqueer” or “intersex.” Genderqueer is a linguistic convention to indicate an identity “beyond” or outside of current binary conceptions of gender either female or male. Intersex is a burgeoning linguistic convention in the United States to also mark in language an identity that is both female and male. As Tate, Ledbetter, and Youssef (2013) note, genderqueer/non-binary includes two sets of distinct identities: (a) those who experience gender identity as a combined sense of female and male and (b) those who experience gender identity as a sense of self that is neither female nor male. With the method detailed here the two different types cannot be distinguished. The versions of the 2QAGI with branching allow for this distinction.

Profile / Current Identity Question / Birth-Assigned Category Question
Genderqueer/Non-binary / Genderqueer / Female
Genderqueer / Male
Genderqueer / Intersex
Intersex / Female
Intersex / Male
