Update: Flu bug
Dear Parents & Guardians:
As you are aware, Alcona Glen ES experienced numerous staff and student absences on Friday April 28 due to a gastrointestinal illness that quickly moved through the building. I am pleased to say that today is much better and we appear to be moving to a healthier state.
Mrs. Miller was in contact with SCDSB personnel and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit on Friday to determine protocols and next steps in ensuring that all necessary precautions were being met. Attention was given to hand washing, sending individuals with symptoms home and additional sanitizing in washrooms. It was determined that a synervoice phone message be sent after school, rather than a letter. Given the number of absences on Friday, a letter would not have made it to many families.
On Friday evening a synervoice message was sent out addressing the concerns of the day. These messages are automated and it is important that you listen to them. We only send synervoice messaging for upcoming events or necessary updates. If you prefer these messages go to your cell phone rather than your home phone, please let us know is writing and we will make that change. We receive a report, once the 600+ calls are made, that indicates the numbers that were successful, timing and recordings that were left.
Over the weekend a team of custodial staff was on site to clean and sanitize the building to prevent further spread of the virus and prepare for the week and entry of students and staff. Although there are a number of student absences today, we seem to be on the mend generally.
I would like to thank Mrs. Miller and staff for coordinating the response plan in my absence on Friday, and our parents who were quick to respond to calls to pick up their children. It is Education Week and we have lots of activities planned to celebrate music, the environment and children’s mental health and well-being. You should receive a newsletter today outlining the scheduled events.
