Nutrition Education and Promotion

The McLeod Independent School District aims to teach, encourage, and support healthy eating by students. Our school should provide nutrition education and engage in nutritional promotions that:

-  are offered at each campus as part of a sequential, comprehensive, standards-based program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their health

-  are displayed in the cafeteria through posters and other signage to encourage healthy eating habits.

Other School Based Activities Designed to Promote Student and Staff Wellness:

Each campus will participate in Field Days and other special events to promote student physical activity and wellness.

McLeod ISD provides a weight room for students and an exercise room for staff members. Students are encouraged to exercise during athletic and physical education classes in a supervised environment. Staff members are allowed time built in to their work day for exercise. Students and staff members engage in healthy competitions such as FitBit challenge to see who takes the most steps in a day. Other staff members will compete in weight loss programs monitored by the school nurse. All programs are designed to promote the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle for students and staff.

III.  Physical Activity Opportunities and Physical Education

All students in grades K-12 will receive daily physical education (or its equivalent of 150 minutes/week for elementary school students and 225 minutes/week for middle and high school students) for the entire school year. All physical education will be taught by a certified physical education teacher.

Athletic programs are offered for grades 6 through 12. These programs offer many after-school opportunities for physical fitness. The District offers the facilities for use for an after-school Pee Wee basketball program. Elementary grades may participate in a structured program of practice and competition.

The McLeod Independent School District will review our nutrition and physical activity policy. The district will, as necessary, revise the wellness policy and develop work plans to facilitate their implementation.

Public Notification

The Wellness Policy and information on implementation (see measuring implementation) will be posted on the district website in an easily retrievable section.

Measuring Implementation

Administrators will periodically measure and make available to the public (see public notification) an assessment on implementation of LWP, including the extent to which the schools are in compliance with LWP, the extent to which the LWP compares to model LWP, and a description of the progress made in attaining goals of LWP.
