Students Mixing Athletics and Reading Together (S.M.A.R.T.)
Block L
● Lancaster’s Varsity Letter Club
● Advisor: Kelly Ambrose
● Dedicated to community service and the development of student/athletes on and
off the field.
Began in 1938
S.M.A.R.T. Goals:
● To provide K-3 students in the Lancaster School District with positive student/athlete role models from Lancaster High School.
● To promote character education, in conjunction with the Lancaster School District’s Character Education Policy, for all elementary and high school students involved.
● To stress the importance of reading and academics in order to be successful in life.
● To promote healthy lifestyles among elementary school students.
Participants:
● Student Co-Chairs
● Five elementary schools chose to participate in the program
● 84 classes participated, allowing the S.M.A.R.T. to effect approximately 2125 K-3 students in the district.
● Approximately 42 high school student/athletes, representing 14 different sports, volunteered to read to the elementary school students.
Recognition:
● S.M.A.R.T. appeared on the Channel 2 News and in the following publications: National Student Leadership Magazine, The Buffalo News (Next Section), Lancaster Bee, Metro Community News, and Your Lancaster Schools.
