Lesson Plans

Chapter 07—Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems

Goals of the Lesson:

The students will learn about the structure and functions of the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. They will learn the terms related to these systems and also define the forms, prefixes, and suffixes. They will learn about the terminology related to symptoms and conditions, tests and procedures, surgical interventions and therapeutic procedures, medications and drug therapies, and specialties of the cardiovascular and lymphatic system. They will also learn about the abbreviations for terms related to the two systems and explain the terms used in medical records and case studies.

Learning Objectives:

7.1 Describe the location of the main cardiovascular and lymphatic structures in the body.

7.2 Define terms related to the heart, the vascular system, and the lymphatic system.

7.3 Define combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes related to the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.

7.4 Define common medical terminology related to the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, including adjectives and related terms, symptoms and conditions, tests and procedures, surgical interventions and therapeutic procedures, medications and drug therapies, and specialties.

7.5 Explain abbreviations for terms related to the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.

7.6 Explain terms used in medical records and case studies involving the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.

7.7 Successfully complete all pronunciation and spelling exercises, and complete all interactive exercises included with the companion Student Resources.

You Will Need:

Gather the following materials and teaching aids for the objectives indicated:

7.1 Material: An unlabeled poster of the heart and cards with labels for parts of the heart written or printed on them.

7.2 Material: Poster of the heart and sufficient number of red and blue arrows.

7.3 Material: Flash cards of the combining forms of the cardiovascular system from Stedman’s Medical Terminology Flash Cards, 2nd edition.

7.4 Material: Several copies of Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing, Illustrated, 6th ed. (2008).

7.5 Material: Sufficient note cards.

7.7 Material: Articles from medical journals or Web sites with a professional audience and Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing, Illustrated, 6th ed. (2008).

Assign each student one or two terms from Symptoms and Medical Conditions sectionin the book and ask that he or she consult a medical dictionary to find a more complete description of the term than what is provided in the text. After several minutes, ask each student to state his or her term(s) and share the dictionary definition with the class.
Materials:
Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing, Illustrated, 6th ed. (2008), several copies.
Divide the class into small groups, and give a different article to each group. Have the students read the article (or part of it) and highlight any terms from the Surgical Interventions and Therapeutic Procedures sectionin the book that they come across. As they come across new medical words, they should circle the words, then try to pronounce and define the new words.
After several minutes, give each group a medical dictionary to help confirm the definitions of the new words.
