BALLOON BASICS
In order to begin this course, we must have an understanding of some basic principles of geography. Use your balloon to complete this activity.
Latitude and Longitude
- Blow up your balloon and follow the teacher’s instructions. Imagine that the balloon is planet Earth.
- Draw the Equator (0’ latitude)
- Draw the Tropic of Cancer (20’ north)
- Draw the Tropic of Capricorn (20’ south)

Draw lines of latitude around the earth like you see them on your balloon.
TRICK: Think of lines of latitude as a ladder climbing from the southern pole to the northern pole
(ladder-tude).
