EQUAL TO THE UPHILL TASK Old Adeyans 0 4th Xl 3

I suppose that, if you judged a game simply on the result, then you would expect to read about an easy victory for a team going for the Championship against one near the foot of the table but, unfortunately, as you can probably guess, this is not necessarily so.

The 4th Xl kicked off with the substantial slope of the pitch in their favour and, early in the game, created several good openings but failed to capitalise. Adeyans appeared to lack a certain amount of confidence in themselves but the longer the score stayed at 0-0 the more they believed in themselves and the more they worked for each other and, after their reasonably bright start, the 4ths lost their way a bit but still remained on top, mainly due to the slope.

Half-time came with no score and Adeyans obviously thinking they had completed the hard part of the game. The good thing about the 4th Xl is that they do play football and this ability serves them well when playing into a wind or, as with today’s game, playing uphill.

In the second half in particular Adeyans’ basic tactic was a long punt and the flick on from a header, but they never really created a clear-cut opening, but this does not mean that we could ever relax as they kept chasing and put us under a certain amount of pressure.

Just as it seemed that neither side would score, the breakthrough came with about 15 minutes to go when a break down the left saw Richard Egan cross the ball for MARK MACE to head home. Although Adeyans gave a good impression of trying to see their task through to the finish, you sensed that their heads dropped just a little, and five minutes later, the 4ths made it 2-0 following a goal-mouth scramble with MATT STONE shooting home from about ten yards, and our third came five minutes from time in similar circumstances in which some good team play and effort eventually saw LOU BARRY finding the net from a fairly acute angle.

Summing up this was a good win for the 4ths without dominating the game as we have in most of our previous league matches. Defensively the team, as a whole, performed as well as the clean sheet suggests, with Andy Kirchin earning his keep, dealing with the expected crosses and long range shots and the unexpected back passes!

Going forward we did not function as well as we have in the past and, at times, had to scrap when things did not go our way but, in the end, the speed and skill of our forwards, which had always caused the Adeyans’ defence problems, finally created the openings for our victory. Geoff Robinson

ALL OUR TODAYS

WAVE UPON WAVE OF YOUNG SALESIANS Old Salesians 3rd Xl 8 9th Xl 1
This was a game of two halves. (Most of them are - ed) In the first 45 minutes we put in a solid performance across the pitch, working hard and only conceding two goals from neat play and one
outstanding long range effort. We carried a threat going forward and MARK MACE scored his first goal of the season, finishing well from a right wing cross.
Stand in Captain Forbes gave a Churchillian half time team talk and then, for the next 45 minutes, stood watching wave upon wave off young Salesians steam pastus. (I suspect their team talk was pretty basic “we are young and quick.... they are not!”
They attacked our flanks well, stretching the pitch, cutting in and always had options to shoot or pull the ball across for their supporting players and we were lucky to onlyconcede six. Despite having 12 we played the last twenty minutes with 10 when one of the players went off due to illness and our spare player (who admittedly wasalready carrying an injury) was in that bar thinking that, if needed, “someone would come and get me orgive me a call”. Jonty (MIA), we salute you.
So another loss but once again we have shown we can compete for periods, and we just need to transfer this effort for the whole game. Thanks to Nick and Josh Mole for helping us out today.

MORE WORK TO BE DONE 2nd Xl 1 Polytcehnic 3

For the first time in the New Year we looked like we were going to have a playable pitch, and we welcomed back Jamie Parkinson to the 2nd Xl!

The Polytechnic defence looked weak but moved the ball well going forward; clearly a very hit or miss team.During the game we had plenty of possession in the final third but our ability to thread the final pass, or finish off a move, did not come off for us.They were 2 - 0 up at half time and goals came from individual errors, and it could have been more if not for some good shot stopping by ‘Eggy’

We got one back early in the second half when a shot from Demola was handled in the box and JON HOWE powered home the penalty.

The visitors got a third with 15 minutes to go from an excellent free kick. Although the Old Boys kept hunting, clean opportunities were few and far between.A tough loss means we still have work to do in the league to stay up. Jon Howe

WE BASICALLY SCORED SIX GOALS 8th Xl 3 Civil Service 8th Xl 3
First goal for the opposition: We lost possession and then had a ball through the middle to deal with... their striker was able to lob our on-coming keeper.

First goal for us: Good play down the wing to quickly work a throw and get a ball into the box. After some scrappy play, the ball fell to STRIDE to score.
Second goals for us: : A great ball over the top of their defence that STRIDE latched onto and calmly netted off the inside of the post in a one on one situation.
Half Time.
Second goal for the opposition:Straight from kick off we passed the ball back through our team but a misplaced ball allowed the opposition in for an easy goal.
Third goal for the opposition: We lost the ball and did not stop a cross. Despite having three players marking one man, the ball was able to find its way into an empty net.
Third goals for us: A fabulous run by RIVENS down the right where he was able to dance round a number of players and finish neatly from a tight angle.
It was a physical game, where we played well at times but our lack of concentration, at times, led to our down fall. Need some wins... Himish Patel
