4) a short description of your institution with focus on project

relevant expertise

The Geophysical Institute (GFI) is dedicated to research and teaching in the field of meteorology, climatology and oceanography. One main research field with relevance for the UAV proposal is the air-sea-ice interaction in polar regions, where atmospheric measurements are very sparse.

The Experimental Meteorology group at the GFI is working on the development and application of small UAVs for the determination of temperature, humidity and wind profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer. A prototype of a corresponding system (SUMO: Small Unmanned Meteorological Observer) has been developed in cooperation with Martin Müller, Christian Lindenberg and Pascal Brisset. It is based on a small and light-weighted model aircraft (Fun-Jet by Multiplex), equipped with the Paparazzi autopilot system. The system has recently proven its functionality with more than 50 flights during the measurement campaign FLOHOF in Central Iceland in July/August 2007.

The measured profiles of meteorological parameters with high spatial and temporal resolution provide important data sets for the validation of fine-scale numerical simulations which are also performed at GFI.

5) an expression of your interest in active participation to the

different work packages

Of course all WPs are of interest, but GFI will concentrate on the application of UAVs for profile measurements in the atmosphere and its meteorological interpretation. So our main focus will be set towards WG2 and WG3.

6) an expression of your general interest for each of the intended work

packages by rating each WP from your institutions point of view:

Work packages / Interest
WG1: UA systems (UAS database, configurations, auto-pilot systems, flight control, data management, ground station software) / 1
WG2: UAS sensors for atmospheric research (sensor database, calibration procedures), turbulent wind vector calculation (e.g. using a combination of inertia sensors, GPS and mini flow probes) / 3
WG3: High resolution 3D atmospheric measurements by UAS (flight strategies, swarms and flocks, data analysis tools, ) / 3
WG4: UAS operation (summary of regulations; homogenisation on European basis; security procedures, UAS operation in hazardous environments) / 2
WG5: the future of UA systems in atmospheric research (battery/fuel cell technology, future sensor technology, insect-size micro UAS) / 1

0: not interesting at all

1: somewhat interesting, but no active participation intended

2: general interest, active participation possible

3: highly interesting, active participation intended
