Course Description: In this class students will learn the skills of various different yoga techniques.Yoga means union, and refers to the union of the body, mind, and breath. It is a discipline that was developed in India and is practiced all over the world.Throughout this class students will learn breathing and relaxation techniques, basic to intermediate yoga postures (asanas)to develop flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance, and how to participate in and create various yoga sequences. Additional components of cardiovascular and strength exercises may also be implemented. By the end of this class, students will be able to perform their own yoga sequences so they can incorporate yoga and basic fitness skills into their daily life.

Objectives:

  • Acquire the basic skills of yoga practice

• Develop an understanding of yoga etiquette and terminology

• Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness

• Develop skills, knowledge, and interest to independently maintain a regular yoga practice

• Develop an understanding of individual differences and acquire a non-competitive, positive self image in

regard to their own body and yoga practice

• Experience immediate and long term benefits of yoga practice

Grading/Dress Code:

Daily participation is very important in this class. Factors that will help determine your grade include: attitude, effort, improvement, appropriate attire, and a weekly journal (a reflection on how you felt before and after class, and what you liked most about that week). Each journal response will be worth 5 points.

Attire: -2 missing t-shirt, and -2 missing fitness shorts/capri/sweatpants/yoga pants.

The following items are allowed during yoga:

  • Shirts (and any other clothing) should have appropriate language.
  • Yoga pants/capris
  • Shorts should follow school dress code. Short shorts will not be permitted during yoga.
  • Jewelry and metal items should be removed before class and stored in locked lockers.
  • Hair should be tied back.
  • Clothing should be school appropriate, no bellies showing and no low cut shirts

AttitudePerformance

  • Participation, cooperation, sincere effort, demonstration of yoga etiquette and mutual respect (Policy violation up to -6 and at the discretion of the teacher) – hitting, pushing, swearing, bullying, harassment, disrespect to self/others, self-motivation, stealing, arguing, and unfair play are some examples.
  • The following steps may be taken when any misconduct occurs:
  • Warning
  • Removal from an activity and an assigned seat (-6 points)/Student teacher conference
  • Phone call to parents
  • Office referral
  • Refusal to participate when prepared or unprepared (semester) -9 pts.

Class Attendance/Participation

  • More than 3 unexcused absences-activity task assigned semester -4 pts.
  • Tardy for class -2 pts.
  • Any student missing more than 3 consecutive days requires a doctor’s excuse.
  • Students that have a doctor’s excuse are NOT allowed to return to class until they have a slip from their doctor saying they are cleared to return. DON’T ASK ME TO PLAY IF YOU DID NOT GET A RELEASE SLIP.
  • (REFERENCE – RED/GRAY DISTRICT BOOK pgs. 2 through 6.)A pink slip must be presented to the Teacher for make-up process to occur. Provided options: physical aerobic activity or written alternative, 2 maximum. Please see teacher for arrangements.
  • Medical/Signed Doctor’s excuse must be given to teacher and office to bar student from class activity. Medical student required to change for class (preparation adaptation).
  • Funeral, school events, college visit 3–days or more and religious holiday will not be subject to make up work.
  • Vacation leave – District Policy guidelines as stated on WHSD vacation request form.

Course Policies

  • Treat each other with respect! Encourage each other and cooperate
  • No judgments
  • Respect me and I will respect you!
  • Bullying of any type will NOT be permitted in my gym or classroom.
  • If there is a problem, you come to ME!
  • Use appropriate language
  • Respect equipment and the facilities.
  • Listen when the teacher is talking. Put simply, when I talk, you don’t.
  • Follow all rules and directions
  • Students are required to stay in the assigned P.E. area.
  • If you need to use the restroom you MUST ask first.
  • If you leave the assigned area, without asking, you will lose points.
  • Do not leave from or to the locker room early
  • Any student who leaves from or to locker room without being told will lose points for the day.
  • Books are not permitted in the gym.
  • This is not a study hall, so do not plan on doing your homework here.
  • Tobacco use
  • Any student using or possessing tobacco/drugs will be sent to the office immediately.
  • Lockers
  • You must attain a lock to put on your locker.
  • I am NOT responsible for any lost or stolen items in the gym/locker room.
  • Everyone must participate
  • If you refuse to participate for no reason, you will lose 9 points.
  • I do not care how good you are at something, as long as you try.
