The Position

Salary: / £12,000 pa

Job Purpose:

  • The Apprentice Network Planner is to (through training and development) assist in the design of civils and fibre-optic infrastructure to agreed methodologies which are cost-effective and fit-for-purpose within timescales that are suitable for both the company and the customer.
  • The aim of the training will be to provide the individual with the necessary skills, knowledge and tools to undertake fibre optic infrastructure network planning autonomously.

Key Points:

  • Training and mentorship to be provided in GIS systems – to gain understanding in the role of geographic data, its associated metadata and the relationships between distinct components in a GIS environment.
  • To understand how different architectures are represented within a GIS system and their role within the wider IT ecosystem.
  • Training and mentorship to be provided in aspects of fibre infrastructure network planning.
  • To understand how the role of network planning fits within the wider company structure and the touchpoints throughout the business. Training will include, but not be limited to:
  • Telecoms civils infrastructure components, their uses and limitations
  • Telecoms cable and fibre components, their uses and limitations
  • Principles of fibre optics
  • Dark fibre products and Lit fibre products and the design considerations of each
  • Differences in architecture and their uses and limitations
  • External and internal survey techniques
  • Construction methods
  • Fibre type, construction, characteristics and uses
  • Regulatory considerations
  • Diversionary works
  • Overview of active equipment

Knowledge & Experience:

Essential:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of GIS
