EXPECTATIONS

1.  Enter the assigned area quietly with your instrument and materials, and be seated.

2.  Begin warm-up activity or review of playing assignment, unless instructed otherwise.

3.  Raise your hand for permission to speak or leave your seat.

4.  Respect the teacher and each other at all times.

5.  Leave the assigned area in an orderly manner.

Gum and candy are to be eaten prior to the start of any rehearsal or band class. The mouth should be washed with water to minimize ensure all food particles will not be transferred to the instrument.

INSTRUMENT STORAGE

The instrumental music room may be used for the storage of string instruments and larger sized band instruments only (i.e. bass clarinets, bassoons, saxophones, brass instruments.) All other students are expected to store their instruments in their locker and are responsible for retrieving their instruments from their lockers at the appropriate bell times. No passes will be issued for retrieving instruments once class has begun.

GRADING POLICY AND PRACTICE CHARTS

Grades will be assessed in accordance to the guidelines as outlined by Prince George’s County Instrumental Music Grading Policy. Students may access their must up-to-date grade report by visiting the Schoolmax Family Portal.

Home practice is an essential part of the student’s continued growth and development in the band class. Practice charts and SmartMusic (in class technology) will be used to monitor and assess student progress in this area.

Students will be evaluated accordingly:

Class work – preparation for class, participation in class, and behavior* – 60%

·  100 Student is prepared/participates with all materials (instrument, music, pencil)

·  90 Student has instrument, but has no music

·  80 Student is present, but has no instrument

*An additional 10 points will be deducted for each behavior infraction (see expectations), and for consecutive incomplete task (continuously missing instrument, music, book, or pencil.)

Homework – method book assignments, worksheets, practice charts – 10%

Assessments – playing and written tests, performances (i.e. concerts) – 30%

Extra Credit – Students may receive up to 5 total points on their final quarter grade if they attend/participate in one of the following:

·  Private lessons (must provide a lesson report containing the name, number, and signature of the private instructor.

·  County or/and State Solo and Ensemble Festival and/or Honor Band

·  Professional Instrumental Concert (must provide ticket stub and 2 paragraph review of the performance.)

PERFORMANCES

All instrumental music students enrolled in an instrumental music class are required to perform at All School Concert Performances, Middle School Band Festival, and the Area Cluster Concert. The Secondary Solo and Ensemble Festival is also encouraged for students meeting and exceeding classroom expectations. Dates, times, and concert attire will be announced in advance. Additional performances may be requested and will be communicated accordingly.

Performance points will be factored into a students overall assessment grade. A written notice from the parent or guardian must be provided 24 hours prior to a performance for a student to be considered for an excused absence. Excused absences will be considered on the following basis:

2.  Illness

3.  Religious Reason

Concert Dress

Ladies: All Black Dress or Black Dress Pants and White Blouse, Black Pantyhose or socks, Black Dress Shoes (no sandals or flip flops)

Gentlemen: Black Suit and White Dress Shirt or Black Slacks and White Dress Shirt, Black Socks, Black Dress Shoes (no running shoes)
