DENTAL STERILIZATION AIDE

JOB SUMMARY

Under direst supervision, provides clinical support services involvingsterilization, preparation, distribution, collection, and storage ofmedical supplies and equipment.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  1. Prepares instruments for sterilization and decontamination.
  1. Operates washer/sterilizer, heat sealer, autoclave, and sonicwasher to clean, automate, decontaminate, and sterilizeinstruments and equipment. Adjusts and records pressure,temperature, and time in accordance with standard procedures.
  1. Sorts and stores sterilized instruments and equipment inappropriate area.
  1. Pre-packages cassettes, wraps cassettes in sterile paper, andattaches identification labels.
  1. Loads instrument carts with cassettes, supplies, and equipmentaccording to patient care requirements. Transports carts toappropriate clinic or service area.
  1. Receives, inspects, and verifies return of all contaminatedinstruments from students and faculty. Transports these toCentral Sterile Unit. Initiates procedures regarding missing ordamaged instruments.
  1. Logs instruments in and out using manual or bar code system.Enters and retrieves data from computerized database.
  1. Completes requisitions to order supplies. Receives, unpacks,labels, and places supplies in proper order on shelves or clustercabinets.

  1. Maintains and updates logs and records of supply transactions.Compiles and files documents such as packing slips, purchaserequisitions, and vendor information.
  1. Observes Universal Precautions regarding the handling ofinfectious waste.
  1. Performs a variety of routine clerical duties such as answeringphones, taking and relaying information, and filing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High-school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: One year in central sterilization or materials managementin a health care environment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

General knowledge of sterilization and decontamination procedures fordental instruments. General knowledge of universal precautionsregarding the handling of infectious waste. Ability to perform basicmathematics. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Abilityto communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to performextensive standing and walking. Ability to push and pull carts ofsupplies to make deliveries around building. Ability to lift, stockshelves, and load carts of supplies and equipment. Skill in operatingequipment such as sonic washers, sterilizers, autoclaves, heatsealers, and sharpening wheels. Ability to operate computers and otherstandard office equipment. Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-daterecords and logs. Ability to wear and work in personal protectiveequipment.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of thework of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.
