Requirements and Competencies

All Board Members are required to be members in good standing with both the Northern VA SHRM Chapter and National SHRM. All Board of Directors positions take approximately 5 to 15 hours a month, which includes participation in monthly board meetings (split between one-hour Friday conference calls and half-day Saturday in-person meetings) and other Northern VA SHRM events. We seek qualified candidates who have the following qualities, skills and abilities:

•  A commitment to Northern VA SHRM and its mission, vision and organizational activities;

•  The ability to devote the necessary time and energy required for the specific leadership positions;

•  Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to motivate member volunteers with passion and optimism;

•  Collaborative and group skills, specifically with the ability to work as a team with other Northern VA SHRM board members, and to build strategic relationships with others as necessary;

•  Communication skills: the ability to fully represent Northern VA SHRM to current and prospective members and sponsors, and to contribute to board/leadership discussions and decisions in a productive, attentive and respectful manner;

•  The willingness and ability to make a one-year commitment;

•  Demonstrate abilities in leadership, influencing, decision making, collaborative teams, conflict management, oral and written communications, planning and organizational skills.

NOVA SHRM Board Position Summaries

PRESIDENT-ELECT

The President-Elect assists the President in overseeing all the activities of the chapter. In the absence of the President, performs all the Presidential responsibilities. Carries out special projects as assigned by the President. Upon request, assists other officers in performing their responsibilities. Attends (and presides over, if necessary) monthly membership and Board of Directors meetings. Participates in the development and implementation of short-term and long-term strategy planning for the Chapter. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10-15 hours per month.

SECRETARY

The Secretary provides order to monthly Board meetings, maintains record of attendance and prepares minutes of all Board meetings for approval. Responsible for keeping an updated roster of names and addresses of all board and volunteer leaders, as required by SHRM. Maintains email distribution lists (Google) and resource sharing tools (Box). Attends monthly Board meetings (required). Participates in Chapter activities. Having an understanding of Robert’s Rule of order is desirable. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.

TREASURER

The Treasurer assumes responsibility for the financial affairs of the chapter. These responsibilities include: preparing financial reports to the Board, arranging for the annual examination and audit of the accounts as may be required by the Board, and performing other duties as determined by the President. The Treasurer shall have the charge and custody of, and be responsible for, all funds and securities of the chapter. The Treasurer shall keep complete and accurate accounts of receipts and disbursements of the chapter, and shall deposit all monies in the name and to the credit of the chapter in the banks and depositories as determined by the Board of Directors. Minimum time commitment per month: 10 hours.

VICE PRESIDENT, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Develops and delivers seminars, workshops and other professional development opportunities for the Chapter membership. Facilitates meetings with the Board to select topics and speakers for bi-annual seminars and periodic workshops to provide in-depth and timely professional development opportunities for members. Contacts potential speakers and makes arrangements for selected meetings, including selecting sites and promoting the program. Ensures programs qualify for desired certification credits. Coordinates event logistics for catering and A/V setup. Provides information regarding workshops and services to the Newsletter Editor and Digital Content Administrator, through written communications and personal contact. Reviews final preparations for meetings to ensure that programs run smoothly. Reviews program evaluations for feedback to be used in planning future events. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Attends monthly Board meetings and participates in Chapter activities. Minimum time commitment per month: 5-10 hours.

VICE PRESIDENT, PROGRAMS

Plans the programs for the monthly chapter meetings, including the selection of subjects and speakers; contacts and follows up with speakers; prepares articles about the program for the monthly newsletter, and performs any other duties as may be determined appropriate in support of the program activities of the Chapter. Coordinates efforts with other Board members and the Vice President, Professional Development to provide the best offerings for the Chapter membership. Reviews final preparations for meetings to ensure that meetings run smoothly. Reviews program evaluations for feedback to be used in planning future events. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10 hours.

EVENTS COORDINATOR (Note: Non-Voting Position)

Responsible for the overall planning and logistics of monthly chapter meetings and semi-annual seminars. Understand and maintain budget requirements for each event. Review and execute necessary vendor contracts. Communicate directly with the VP, Programs to understand meeting requirements. Manage and communicate Event plan, logistics, and timeline. Secure Event space, including meeting room, entry/exit security protocols, parking, and directions. Liaise with Event space point-of-contact for Event-day logistics. Coordinate all catering/refreshments requirements. Work with SHRM Foundation Board Member to include necessary Foundation logistics at meetings. Minimum time commitment per month: 5-10 hours.

UNIVERSITY RELATIONS COORDINATOR (Note: Non-Voting Position)

Manages the college outreach efforts and scholarship program. NOVA SHRM has Student Chapter relationships with George Mason University, George Washington University and Marymount University. Build and maintain relationships with professor and student leaders. To assist Chapter members, their children and locally sponsored students from affiliated Chapters with their educational pursuits in the field of Human Resources. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.

NEWSLETTER EDITOR (Note: Non-Voting Position)

The Newsletter Editor coordinates the publishing of the chapter’s monthly newsletter which provides timely and comprehensive information to chapter members about programs, workshops, and other matters of interest. Gathers articles from Board leaders and volunteers. Persuades volunteers to submit articles by newsletter deadline. Serves as quality control. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR (Note: Non-Voting Position)

The Volunteer Coordinator recruits volunteers to support chapter operations. Ensures chapter has a sufficient number of volunteers to maintain operations. Manages member in transition program in coordination with the VP of Membership. Seeks volunteers to serve in one-time activities or longer-term projects and sells benefits of chapter volunteerism. Conveys to volunteers that volunteerism is an investment in their career that reaps high returns. Represents chapter in the Human Resources Community. Responsible for identifying a monthly Feature Member for the NOVA SHRM website and providing the necessary information to the Digital Content Administrator. Minimum time commitment per month: 10 hours.

LEADER, COMMUNITY RELATIONS (Note: Non-Voting Position)

The Leader, Community Relations monitors and evaluates on a continuing basis local community activities. Plans community events to benefit the community. Manages the chapter outreach efforts in the community. Recommends community services projects to be supported by the Chapter. Makes Chapter members aware of community organizations that would be beneficial to HR professionals or businesses. Provides information to Chapter members about local community organizations through various media outlets. Maintains liaison with local community organizations. Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.

SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIST(Note: Non-Voting Position)

The Social Media Strategist willcraft and carry outan effectiveonlinemember engagement strategy via NOVA SHRM’s social media channels.The Strategistwill manage, update and enhance our social mediapresenceinalignment with marketing and communication efforts and insupport of the chapter’s goals, programs and events.Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 10 hours.

DIRECTOR, SHRM FOUNDATION (Note: Non-Voting Position)

Educate, promote, and represent the interests of the SHRM Foundation and its activities to the chapter membership. Encourage the chapter membership to contribute financially to the SHRM Foundation as a show of support for the human resources profession.Participate in the development and implementation of short-term and long-term strategic planning for the chapter.Represents the Chapter in the Human Resources community. Minimum time commitment per month: 5 hours.
