LACTOSE TOLERANCE TEST

PATIENT INSTRUCTION SHEET

1.  No food or liquid, except water, should be consumed for at least 8 hours prior to the test.

2.  When you come in for the test, a blood specimen will be drawn and a urine specimen requested. Your weight will be requested.

3.  You will be given 50 grams of lactose to drink. It is important that you drink it ALL and in a timely fashion.

4.  Pediatric patients are given 2 grams of lactose per kilogram of body weight.

5.  Periodically throughout the morning, additional blood and urine samples will be obtained. (Fasting before drink, ½ hour, 1 hour, 2 hour and 3 hours after drink)

6.  You must eat or drink nothing, except limited water, during the test.

7.  The phlebotomist will process specimens and label them with the times they were collected. All specimens will be submitted to the laboratory with a request for testing, indicating the number of specimens submitted.
