Introduction
For the 10th year there will a summer school held in Sholing.
Summer School will be the focal point of our year’s training. You learn more in these three days than you do in six month’s regular training – ask anyone who has been on other Summer Camps.
The concept of Summer Camp is special, but it is not unique to us. Kancho Joko Nimomiya, the 1978 All-Japan Knockdown Champion and Grandmaster of Enshin Karate, says about Summer Camp Training:.
“A dojo is a place away from the everyday world, away from the appointments and the schedules of our daily business. But even in the dojo routine can become too familiar. Sometimes students need to step away from the dojo and train in a different setting. They need to find a quiet place where they can reflect on their training. This is the value of summer camp training. Students eat, train and relax together in a peaceful setting, a place that gives everyone a chance to look at themselves and others in a different light. The roles and identities students have taken on in the dojo take on a new dimension.
The training is important, but other experiences are equally valuable. Cooperating in preparing meals and cleaning up, learning to work together, and sharing responsibilities regardless of one’s background, job or income – these are the most valuable lessons. For three days everyone is the same, working and living together. Through summer camp training students learn to carry the challenge out of the dojo and into any situation or environment.”

As usual Summer School sometimes culminates with a final grading

Equipment Checklist
ClothingTraining Clothes – Most of the time you can train in whatever you want – combats, tracksuits, leggings, shorts etc. There are three days of training and all sessions are outdoors. You will probably get wet and you will definitely get muddy!
Karate Gi & Belt – Gi’s will only be worn in the grading at the end of the second and third days, but you will need a Gi top for the grappling session. Again, there is no indoor training so bring an old Gi if you have one.
Training Shoes – Again you can train in whatever you want – trainers, boots, slaps, barefoot, gentlemen’s smoking slippers etc, but you will need trainers for the fitness session.
Waterproofs – There is no indoors. We will be training outside whatever the weather so you might want to have some waterproofs with you.
Camping Equipment
Tent – Buy, beg, borrow or steal a decent one but make sure you have one or at least a place in someone else’s BEFORE WE GO. You can pick up a 2 man tent for around £30.
Sleeping Bag, Bed Mat etc – Make sure you have a sleeping bag with you (some people take a duvet). Bed mats are also a good idea as they keep you off the ground – warmer, drier and more comfortable.
Food, Can be provided by the club.But you will be responsible for your meals. A menu is available. Only whats on the menu will be provided.
Torch, Lamp, Light – The toilet block is a walk away and it gets dark at night!
Knife, Fork , Spoon, Plate , Cereal Bowl & Cup ( Plastic Only )
Miscellaneous
Towel – washing etc.
Wash kit – We want you up bright and early and, squeaky clean, and ready to go.
Basic First Aid Kit – supplied by Club
Water Bottles – There is one water point so you will want something to store water by your tent. Also, it might be hot so you will want to take water to the training areas.
Clothes Line – Not essential but can be useful.
Toilet Paper – Not something you want to be caught without although there are leaves, sticks and grasses about the place … and rabbits……and students.
Sun Cream – You never know.
Hat – Rain or shine, they can be useful.
Alarm Clock – May be useful but as ever, we will probably give you a little wakeup call before the morning sessions anyway.
Licence – Especially for those grading but the course gets logged in any case.
Pads – Please bring down a set of pads. If you don’t have any, see me before we go and we will allocate sets out to people. Take one set down, bring one set back please!
Beer – It is very important to replace those fluids at the end of the day and beer is lovely, and good for bribing Instructors.
