Speed, Distance And Time
Time (1)
m.p.h.means miles per hour
k.p.h.means kilometres per hour
If I cycle 15 miles at a speed of 5 m.p.h. How long has the journey taken me?
15 miles-5 miles per hour
10 miles in 2 hrs
15 miles in 3 hrs
It takes 3 hours.
You can see that to find the TIME a journey takes we divide the DISTANCE by SPEED
TIME = DISTANCE SPEED
Follow these worked examples to find the answer:
- A motorbike travels 100 miles at a speed of 50 m.p.h.
How long does it take?
100 miles 50= _____ hours

How long will this take?
24 miles 8= _____ hours
- A train travels 220 miles at 55 m.p.h.
How long is the journey?
220 miles 55= _____ hours
Now find the time taken for each journey.

Time (2)
Journeys don’t always take whole hours. Sometimes we have to work out the time taken in minutes, or in fractions of an hour.
Look at these examples:
- How long will it take me to travel 50 miles at 20 m.p.h.?
50 20 = 2.5 or 2½ hours
1 hr =20 miles
2 hrs =40 miles
2.5 hrs =50 miles
- I travel 5 miles at 20 m.p.h.
How long is the journey?
5 miles 20 m.p.h. = 0.25 hrs or ¼ of an hour or 15 mins
20 miles in 1 hr
10 miles in ½ hr
5 miles in ¼ hr
- I travel 12 miles at 60 m.p.h.
How long will it take?
12 6 =0.2 hours
0.2 x 60 mins = 12 mins
60 milesin1 hour
5 5
12 miles12 min
