“Non-violent, non-violent.” We shall overcome. These words differ greatly from the famous statement of “By any means necessary.” Within the same movement arose two prolific leaders who captivated both extremes of the African-American community.

MATERIALS: paper/notebook, pen/pencils, textbook, graphic organizer, overhead, coins, select readings

DO NOW: There is a coin placed on your desk. Pick it up and examine it. Is there one side of the coin that is worth more than the other? Explain why you said yes or no. TSW write 5-7 sentences on topic aforementioned in the Do Now.

SET: Share Do Now. TTW will explain the significance of Do Now (shows the total value of the Civil Rights Movement) and introduce Dr. King and Malcolm X.

C.  TSW use graphic organizer to compare and contrast the lives and mainstream teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X using selected reading given by the teacher. (20 minutes) TSW make note of mission( what were the overall goals of the men), method( how did they wish to accomplish this), background (what type of family did the leaders come from) and religion (what did their respective faiths say about resistance) Discussion immediately following.

D.  CLOSURE (5 minutes)

CLOSURE: TSW show verbal understanding of the ideals of Civil Rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. TTW preview the review and quiz in the following class period.
