Writing their own story. Engaging students through the Theory of Self-Authorship.

Jason Callis MSW, University of Georgia

Knowing how to best serve students in a Collegiate Recovery Program can present some difficult programmatic decisions. Often times I believe we can be too prescriptive in the world of higher education and leave students with little discretion in how to navigate their own lives. In this presentation I offer a model based on Baxter Magolda's Theory of Self Authorship and Learning Partnerships Model to engage students in the autonomy needed to be successful in navigating their collegiate experience as well as life after college. I will also show the benefits of using this model in community building and strengthened relationships among students.
