MEMORANDUM FOR INBOUND AVIATION PRE-FLIGHT INDOCTRINATION (API) STUDENTS

FROM: LT J.S. Dixey, Flight Management Officer, Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC)

SUBJECT: INFORMATION PACKAGE

Congratulations on your selection to attend flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola (NASP). The following information package is provided to assist you in your transition.

1. NASC trains Student Naval Aviators (SNA) and Student Naval Flight Officers (SNFO) as well as all Marine Aviators, Coast Guard Aviators, and selected Air Force Aviation Officers. This is the first step in the training pipeline. All students will initially report to the NASC Building 633 Quarterdeck for check-in at 0700 (to get orders stamped). Students will then immediately report to the Flight Management Office. More information regarding various subjects will be presented at the check in brief given to all students where there will be ample opportunity for questions/answers.

2. Upon API graduation, pilots will proceed to either NAS Whiting Field (TW-5), NAS Corpus Christi (TW-4), or Vance AFB for a minimum of six months primary training. Naval Flight Officers will remain on station to complete primary at NAS Pensacola at TW-6.

I know you will find the attached information package helpful. Although this information package is helpful, it is not all-inclusive and I know there may be many questions. Your first priority however should be to get down here safely and check in. When you are here hopefully all your questions will get answered. In the hopes of making check in as painless as possible I would like your input on how it may be improved for future students. Please contact me if you have questions about NASP, training, or other matters. My duty phone is Commercial (850) 452-2889 or DSN 922-2889. Again, congratulations on your assignment and I look forward to meeting you.

Married Personnel (written PCS orders with Follow on orders to Whiting) are authorized to move their dependents to Pensacola at government expense (PCS) and are authorized to live either on-base, if available, or off-base.

INDOCTRINATION (API)

API Course Information

API is a course under the NASC Aviation Training School (ATS) Department, consisting of ground school prior to the various subsequent Navy flight school programs. For more information about ATS you may visit: https://www.cnet.navy.mil/nascweb/ats.htm

API consists of four weeks of academics (aerodynamics, weather, navigation, engines, flight rules & regulations) and water survival. Do not attempt to study for this course in advance. What you learn from other sources may not match what you will be taught in API.

While attending API, you will be required to complete the Navy PRT and other physically demanding requirements. Therefore, you should maintain a high level of physical readiness prior to your arrival. Personnel who are on a medical profile WILL NOT be able to start class and must contact the AF Liaison, (850) 452-3136, prior to departure from their losing location. You may visit the following link to view the physical requirements:

https://www.cnet.navy.mil/nascweb/survival/survival_api.htm

The last two weeks of API consists of training with NOMI, which involves more water survival (Pensacola Bay), altitude chamber, dunkers, and physiology academics. See the following link for more information: http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/Text/Std/ASTCPens/default.htm

The API syllabus, on the next page, is provided for your information.
