OPTIONAL Extension/Enrichment/Challenge Activity Choices

1.  Pretend you are living among the Native Americans in the Northwest Territory. Write a story about what you observe there after the American Revolution. How did things change?

2.  Tecumseh tried to unite Native American groups to oppose American expansion. Write a speech he could have made and record it using Audacity.

3.  Using Audacity, create a news show report on either the War of 1812. You can give a summary and/or interview a person from the war.

4.  Pretend you are a newspaper editor covering the conversation between Chief O-ge-maw-ke-ke-to and Governor Cass. Write an editorial that tells your opinion whether or not you agree with the statement of Chief O-ge-maw-ke-ke-to. (Make sure you summarize what happened before you give your opinion.)

5.  Design a travel brochure, illustrated in color, for an imaginary company that provided passage in the 1800s along the Erie Canal. The brochure should convince people to move Michigan and travel on the Erie Canal.

6.  Pretend you are a pioneer living on the Michigan frontier any time from 1826-1850. Write a diary telling about your life. You might want to include illustrations.

7.  In 1819, under the Treaty of Saginaw, Native Americans sold 6 million acres of land to the U.S. government for $3,000.

a.  Write a list of facts explaining what the Treaty of Saginaw was that tells Who, What, When, Where, Why.

b.  In 1819, how much did the government pay for 1 million acres? How much did the government pay for 80 acres? How much was that for 1 acre? (HINT: Use a calculator—answer will involve a very small number—a long decimal.)

c.  In 1820, 80 acres of Michigan land sold to pioneer settlers for $100 (or $1.25 per acre). How many times more did the government charge settlers in 1820 than for what it paid for the land in 1819?

d.  Research to find out a reasonable price for an acre of land TODAY in that area (look at the map on page 115). How many times more does the land sell for today than what it sold for in 1819? How many times more does the land sell for today than what it sold for in 1820? Show all of your work. Cite your source for where you found today’s price for an acre of land in the Saginaw Treaty area and tell what city you searched.
