Post-November-Meeting Module Overview
This module consists of a few components to help you consolidate the content and standards from our recent face-to-face meeting. You are strongly encouraged to complete these tasks in the order presented so that we can maximize the scaffolding provided by each activity. Pay close attention to due dates so that you don't miss required discussions or submissions.
This module will consist of 4 general tasks:
· Reading & discussion in MLC
· Content consolidation assignment
· CCSSM/Intel Math Matrix
· Mathematics Learning Community (meeting, discussion & reflection)
A. Readings from "A Mathematics Source Book" (reinforce the content)
Read “Decimals” (pp 71 – 78) & “Ratios and Rates” (pp. 99 – 103) in “A Mathematics Source Book.”
Think about the connections between the material you read in A Mathematics Source Book, the content covered in the Intel Math Program during the last session, and your own teaching situation as you continue the fall semester. When you meet in your Mathematics Learning Community, spend a little time discussing this reading and its connections to your current teaching situation. How does the reading from A Mathematics Source Book support the content learned during our last face-to-face session of the Intel Math Program? What content is reinforced? What content appears a little new/different? How do the "Teaching Tips" and “Learning Pitfalls” from the Source Book support the content and pedagogy of the Intel Math Program? How does this content apply to your teaching? Your own content development? Continue reflecting, as well, on how the Intel Math Program and your experiences as a learner in this program are impacting your view of mathematics, mathematics teaching and learning, your students and yourself.
You are required to meet in your Mathematics Learning Community prior to December 20 and discuss this reading as one of your tasks. While in your MLC keep a record/summary of this discussion and submit an MLC report via the report submission tool on the course website: http://oak.ucc.nau.edu/ald4/KIM.htm .
B. Content Assignment (reinforce the content)
Complete the following problems from Unit 6 in the green book: Unit 6, Section 7 (p. 496 – 498) #1ac, 2ac, 3bd, 4, 7 AND finish pr2 # 1 – 7 (p. 474)
You are encouraged, though not required,to complete this with members from your Mathematics Learning Community (MLC). This assignment is due at the beginning of our face to face meeting in February.
Suggested due date: prior to MLC meeting, which should take place sometime before December 20
C. Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) & Intel Mathematics Program Matriculation Matrix (consolidate the learning)
Using the same matrix you have begun working on, select another unit that has been addressed in Intel thus far (Unit 1 – 6) from the Intel Math curriculum to cross reference with the CCSS for Mathematics. Peruse the CCSS for your grade level and determine which, if any, of the Intel Math problems from your chosen unit address the content for your grade level. If there is a connection between Intel Math and the CCSSM, indicate so by placing the Unit #, Section # and Prob # in the intersecting box (e.g. Unit 1.3 Prob Set 5 #2).
Complete the third unit from your matrix to bring to your Mathematics Learning Community to share with your colleagues. Use the matrix as a place to begin making sense of the Common Core standards, as a way to refamiliarize yourself with the content from Intel Math, and as a springboard for discussion within your MLC regarding the content/pedagogy from Intel and its connections to your teaching.
Suggested due date: prior to MLC meeting, which should take place sometime before December 20
D. Mathematics Learning Community Meeting (consolidate the learning)
You are required to meet with your MLC once before December 20.
At your MLC December meeting:
· Discuss and reflect on the “Decimals” and “Ratios and Rates” readings from “A Mathematics Sourcebook.”
· Share, compare and collaborate on your content assignment.
· Share, compare and collaborate on your CCSSM/Intel Math Matrix
After your MLC meeting(s):
· Have one person fill out an electronic MLC meeting record at http://oak.ucc.nau.edu/ald4/KIM.htm . (One of these will be submitted by one person in your MLC after each meeting. Rotate duties on who is responsible for filling out & submitting the record sheet after each meeting.)
· Hold on to the content assignment & the matrix until our next face-to-face meeting. They will be shared & collected in February.
Due at next face-to-face meeting:
· Completed content assignment
· Grade-level matrix with third unit completed (i.e. filled in with respect to Intel content)
