SECTION 238239.16 - PROPELLER UNIT HEATERS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS
- Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2SUMMARY
- This Section includes propeller unit heaters.
1.3SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: Include specialties and accessories for each unit type and configuration indicated.
- LEED Submittals:
- Product Data for PrerequisiteIEQ1: Documentation indicating that units comply with ASHRAE62.1, Section5 - "Systems and Equipment."
- Shop Drawings: Submit the following for each unit type and configuration:
- Plans, elevations, sections, and details.
- Details of anchorages and attachments to structure and to supported equipment.
- Power, signal, and control wiring diagrams. Differentiate between manufacturer-installed and field-installed wiring.
- Equipment schedules to include rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating weights; furnished specialties; and accessories.
- Field Test Reports: Written reports of tests specified in Part3 of this Section.
- Maintenance Data: For propeller unit heaters to include in maintenance manuals. Include the following:
- Maintenance schedules and repair parts lists for motors, coils, integral controls, and filters.
1.4QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, Article100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.
- Comply with UL2021.
1.5COORDINATION
- Coordinate layout and installation of propeller unit heaters and suspension system components with other construction that penetrates ceilings or is supported by them, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, fire-suppression-system components, and partition assemblies.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1MANUFACTURERS
- Manufacturers: Unless otherwise directed by the Owner, provide products by one of the following:
- Airtherm Manufacturing Company.
- Carrier Corp.
- Dunham-Bush, Inc.
- Daikin McQuay International.
- Trane Company (The); North American Commercial Group.
- U S A Coil & Air Inc.
2.2PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
"ASHRAE Compliance" Paragraph below may be required to comply with Project requirements or authorities having jurisdiction. LEEDPrerequisiteIEQ1 requires compliance with requirements in ASHRAE62.1, including requirements for controls, surfaces in contact with the airstream, particulate and gaseous filtration, coil selection and cleaning, and equipment access. Verify, with manufacturers, availability of units with components and features that comply with these requirements.
- ASHRAE Compliance: Applicable requirements in ASHRAE62.1, Section5 - "Systems and Equipment" and Section7 - "Construction and Startup."
"ASHRAE/IESNA90.1 Compliance" Paragraph below may be required to comply with Project requirements or authorities having jurisdiction. LEEDPrerequisiteEA2 requires compliance with requirements in ASHRAE/IESNA90.1.
- ASHRAE/IESNA90.1 Compliance: Applicable requirements in ASHRAE/IESNA90.1, Section6 - "Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning."
2.3UNIT HEATERS
- Description: An assembly including casing, coil, fan, and motor in vertical discharge configuration with radial louver diffuser in draw-through configuration or horizontal discharge configuration with horizontal, adjustable louvers in blow-through configuration, as scheduled on the Drawings.
2.4MATERIALS
- Casing: Galvanized steel, with removable panels.
- Cabinet Finish: Bonderize, phosphatize, and flow-coat with baked-on primer and manufacturer's standard paint applied to factory-assembled and -tested propeller unit heater before shipping.
"Airstream Surfaces" Paragraph below may be required to comply with Project requirements or authorities having jurisdiction. Retain paragraph to comply with LEEDPrerequisiteIEQ1.
- Airstream Surfaces: Surfaces in contact with the airstream shall comply with requirements in ASHRAE62.1.
2.5COILS
- Hot-Water Coil: Copper tube, 0.031-inch wall thickness, with mechanically bonded aluminum fins spaced no closer than 0.1inch and rated for a minimum working pressure of 200 psig and a maximum entering water temperature of 325 degF, with manual air vent. Test for leaks to 375 psig underwater.
- Steam Coil: Copper tube, 0.031-inch wall thickness, with mechanically bonded aluminum fins spaced no closer than 0.1 inch and rated for a minimum working pressure of 75 psig.
2.6ELECTRIC-RESISTANCE HEATING ELEMENTS
- Nickel-chromium heating wire, free from expansion noise and 60-Hz hum, embedded in magnesium-oxide insulating refractory and sealed in high-mass steel or corrosion-resistant metallic sheath with fins no closer than 0.16 inch. Element ends shall be enclosed in terminal box. Fin surface temperature shall not exceed 550 degF at any point during normal operation.
- Circuit Protection: One-time fuses in terminal box for overcurrent protection and limit controls for over temperature protection of heaters.
- Wiring Terminations: Match conductor materials and sizes indicated.
2.7FAN
- Propeller with aluminum blades directly connected to motor.
2.8FAN MOTORS
- Motors, 1/2 hp and Smaller: Shaded-pole, multispeed motor with integral thermal-overload protection.
- Motors, 3/4 hp and Larger: Totally enclosed with permanently lubricated ball bearings.
2.9ACCESSORIES
- Horizontal Configuration: Louver fin diffuser.
- Vertical Configuration: Louver cone diffuser.
2.10CONTROLS
- Control Devices: Unit-mounted fan-speed switch and wall-mounted thermostat.
2.11SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL
- Test propeller unit heater coils according to ASHRAE33.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1EXAMINATION
- Examine areas to receive propeller unit heaters for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance.
- Examine roughing-in for piping and electrical connections to verify actual locations before propeller unit heater installation.
- Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2INSTALLATION
- Install propeller unit heaters level and plumb.
- Install propeller unit heaters to comply with NFPA90A.
- Suspend propeller unit heaters from structure with rubber-in-shear vibration isolators (rubber hangers).
- Install wall-mounting thermostats in electrical outlet boxes at heights to match lighting controls.
3.3CONNECTIONS
- Piping installation requirements are specified in other Division23 Sections. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties.
- Unless otherwise indicated, install shutoff valve and union or flange on each connection.
- Install piping adjacent to heater to allow service and maintenance.
- Ground equipment in accordance with Division25 Section "Grounding and Bonding for Electrical Ayatems."
- Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer's published torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those specified in UL486A and UL486B.
3.4FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
- Testing: Perform the following field quality-control testing and report results in writing:
- After electrical circuitry has been energized, start units to confirm proper motor rotation and unit operation.
- Test and adjust controls and safeties.
- Repair or replace malfunctioning units. Retest as specified above after repairs or replacements are made.
3.5CLEANING
- After installing units, inspect unit cabinet for damage to finish. Remove paint splatters and other spots, dirt, and debris. Repair damaged finish to match original finish.
- After installing units, clean propeller unit heaters internally.
