Second International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Landfall Processes (IWTCLP-II)
The IWTCLP-II is a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Research Program (WWRP)workshop/symposium under the Tropical Meteorology Research Program (TMRP/WWRP). It will also beco-sponsored by the WMO/WWW/ Tropical Cyclone Program. The purposes of the IWTCLP-II are to assess the state-of-the-art in research(including field programs) and forecast advances since the first IWTCLP held in Macao,China during March 2005,and then determine what is required to improvethe forecasts and early warnings of tropical cyclone landfall. This will also be a forum to transfer new science and technology to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and thus contribute to the reduction of disaster risk through improved forecasts of tropical cyclonelandfall events.
At the kind invitation of the Government of China, IWTCLP-II will be held in Shanghai during 19-23 October2009 inconjunction with a program on theTyphoon Landfall Early Warning System associated with the Shanghai EXPO 2010.The co-chairs of IWTCLP-II are Prof.Lianshou Chen (Chair, TMRP) and Prof. Russell Elsberry (Chair, Tropical Cyclone Panel). The workshop will include both keynote lectures and contributed papers for oral or poster presentation that focus on landfalling tropical cyclones, which includes storms that approachor cross the coast. Contributed papers are encouraged onthe following topics:
- Observations and field programs
- Track, structure, and intensity changes near the coast
- Topographic and land surface effects, especially onrainfall
- Physicalprocesses and energy transfers during the extratropical transition
- High-impact landfall events (including heavy rain, damaging winds, and storm surge)
- Forecast techniques and early warning systems for landfall
Abstracts of less than 200 words of proposed contributions to IWTCLP-II should be submitted to Prof. Chen () or Prof. Elsberry () by 15 July 2009. Acceptances will be indicated by 1 August 2009. Extended abstracts of 3-5 pages in length for accepted papers will be requested for a preprint volume that will include longer contributions from the keynote lectures. The deadline for extended abstract submission of both keynote and contributed papers is 15 September 2009, and should be sent to Mr. Sun Rui () with “IWTCLP-II extended abstract” in the subjectline of the email. The tentative framework of the IWTCLP-II is attached herewith.
