Marine Science – Research Project
The ocean is a new frontier - a place that is home to many organisms discovered and waiting to be discovered. These organisms include microscopic archaebacteria that live in extreme conditions to the largest animal to grace the ocean, the blue whale. For this project, you will select an organism of your interest and complete a two part research project. Part one will be a research paper and part two will be a presentation. The requirements of your paper and presentation are outlined below. The “topics” section simply gives suggestions to what you may want to research. You are certainly not limited to looking for information only outlined on this page.
- Topic: Marine Organism
- Name
- Common:
- Scientific:
- Variations (subgenera, subspecies)
- Description
- Size
- Weight
- Sexual dimorphism (gender differences)
- Developmental stages/life cycle
- Sexual vs. asexual
- Size at birth
- Important developmental stages
- Incubation/gestation period
- Period to sexual maturity
- Life expectancy
- Diet
- Food sources
- Method of food acquisition
- Possible predators
- Behavior
- Courtship behavior
- Social behavior
- Defense: camouflage, venom, shell . . . etc.
- Migration
- Other unique behavior
- Habitat
- In what zone of the ocean does the organism live Location: benthic, pelagic, estuary, coastal
- Geographic location
- Temperature preference
- Niche
- Producer vs. consumer
- Role in its ecosystem
- Human Impact
- Status on endangered list
- Conservation/preservation efforts
- Impact on human
- Paper
- You will create a Wikipedia page that contains all the information from the previous page The Wiki page is to be in paragraph form
- You will need to submit your paper to Turn-it-in in order for it to be eligible for graduation credit
- Works cited page
- There must be at least 4 sources listed in your works sighted section
- The sights must be inMLA format
- Presentation
- Complete and Present a Poser that contains all of the above information. On the presentation day(s) you will be required to present your poser to the teacher as well as your peers.
