Possible payment sources for a recreational bike 2016

Things to remember:

·  Bikes are not paid for through standard medical insurances.

·  Invacare, Norco and Partner’s are not here as primary sellers of this equipment. They have shown great interest in these products and are available to discuss potential payment options.

Possible funding sources: (Known to us but not exhaustive – search for yourself!)

1.  Private pay – It is not uncommon to purchase bikes privately, and some families and individuals have successfully held fundraisers or saved up for the bike over time. Most suppliers are willing to work on a payment plan to spread the cost out over several months. Discuss this with your supplier.

2.  Child Development Center – If your child/adolescent is on the Children’s Intensive Medicaid Waiver with CDC, this may be a potential funding source for a recreation/therapeutic bike. Please discuss this with your case manager.

3.  Medicaid HCBS – If you or your child is served by the Home and Community Based Services Medicaid Waiver, this may be a potential funding source for a recreation/therapeutic bike. Please discuss this with your case manager.

4.  Mary and Marshall Brondum Foundation – This is a local philanthropic foundation that grants monies four times a year for equipment/services that are not covered through standard insurance. Your therapist can assist you with the Brondum application if you wish or you can go online to www.brondumfoundation.org. Please note quarterly application dates as they adhere strictly to these dates.

5.  Travis Roy Foundation – This foundation is specifically for individuals with spinal cord injury. To down load application and read about this foundation, please go to www.travisroyfoundation.org

6.  First Hand Foundation – This foundation funds equipment not covered by insurance for children and youth age 18 and under. Their application is available at https://applications.cerner.com/firsthand/.

7.  Friends of Man – Based in Colorado, this foundation provides funding for adults and children with disabilities and special needs. Go to their website at http://www.friendsofman.org/ for application information.
