The Sermon on the Mount

Rock Solid

Matthew 7:24-27 – 24“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be likea wise man who built his house on the rock.25And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.26And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be likea foolish man who built his house on the sand.27And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Taste and See

Matthew 5:13-16

Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13-16 – 13“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14“You are the light of the world.A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deedsand glorifyyour Father in heaven.

Salt

Matthew 5:13 – “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Who is?

·  You are the salt of the earth.

·  The blessed from 1-12

·  (You are who He says you are. Be who you are.)

The Salt

Salt is used for many things. Today we’ll look at the two primary ways the crowd that Jesus was speaking to would have used salt.

·  Seasoning: for heightening or improving the flavor

o  The world that God puts us in should be improved because of us.

o  We should pull out the best in situations, settings and people.

§  Proverbs 20:5 – The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters,
but one who has insight draws them out.

·  Preservative: to prepare so as to resist decomposition

o  Our Biblical living and standards help to fight the rotting of culture.

§  People blame Christians for many things and forget that universities, hospitals and orphanages in the western world came from Christianity.

Out of the Shaker

Jesus says that we are the salt of the earth. We were not built to stay away from the world but make the world better by being in it.

·  The benefits of salt only happen when salt is applied directly.

·  Shaker shut-ins

o  The culture doesn’t mind salt as long as it stays in the shaker.

·  We should be shaken out all over the community.

Salt without Saltiness

·  Salt in Jesus’ day

o  Our salt, sodium chloride, cannot lose its saltiness but the salt that the crowd would have been used to was salt collected from the Dead Sea. It had other minerals mixed in making it impure and could potentially have its saltiness leeched out.

·  Salt loses its affect when diluted, polluted or contaminated

Useless

·  We are walked on by society when we claim to be different but prove to be the same.

o  (If there is no difference than there is no difference. If you don’t live it than you don’t believe it.)

·  We lose our ability to witness.

Light

Matthew 5:14-16 – 14“You are the light of the world.A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deedsand glorifyyour Father in heaven.

Who is?

·  You are the light of the world

·  The blessed from 1-12

·  (You are who He says you are. Be who you are.)

The Light

·  Jesus is the Light

o  John 8:12 – 12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said,“I amthe light of the world.Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

o  John 1:1-5 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,and the Word was God.2He was with God in the beginning.3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4In him was life, and that life was the lightof all mankind.5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcomeit.

o  John 3:19-21 – 19This is the verdict: Lighthas come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

·  Reflectors

o  2 Corinthians 3:17-18 – 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.18And we all, who with unveiled faces reflectthe Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his imagewith ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

·  Light Walkers

o  1 John 1:5-2:6 – 5This is the message we have heardfrom him and declare to you: God is light;in him there is no darkness at all.6If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,we lie and do not live out the truth.7But if we walk in the light,as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from allsin.

8If we claim to be without sin,we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sinsand purify us from all unrighteousness.10If we claim we have not sinned,we make him out to be a liarand his word is not in us.

2My dear children,I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3We knowthat we have come to know himif we keep his commands.4Whoever says, “I know him,”but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.5But if anyone obeys his word, love for Godis truly made complete in them. This is how we knowwe are in him:6Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Hilltop

·  Jesus has given us a new position with God and with men. That new position makes us obvious.

Rise and Shine

·  Not made to be hidden. Your Christianity is to be lived out loud.

o  Private personal holiness AND public exposure.

Before Men For God

·  Authentic good deeds done not for our praise but God’s glory and the benefit of others.

(If you were accused of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?)
