general mentors
Thank you for volunteering to become a general mentor for SWS! Since our mission is to educate women about investing and personal financial independence, as well as about career or general professional advice, our general mentorsfunction as professional and experienced advisors for the new members of the organization. Each mentor will be assigned up to four mentees who will be in touch throughout the semester as questions or concerns arise.
what to expect from mentees
Mentees will be contacting you by e-mail or telephone (whichever you prefer) after they receive their mentoring assignment, but the program is entirely based on their initiative to contact you as they go through the SWS education program. We would like you to serve as a resource for them on questions pertaining to investing, finance, and even career opportunities in business. With this in mind, the time commitment for mentors is not large, as it is up to the mentees to begin the mentoring relationship and utilize your knowledge and expertise.
While we have encouraged the mentees to be respectful and courteous in their interactions with you, this mentoring relationship will be more informal, as we would like our students to feel comfortable asking you even the most basic or “silly” questions. Our primary goal is to foster a level of comfort and ease amongst mentoring pairs, so that it will be a mutually beneficial relationship.
general comments about the program
Currently, we have 72 undergraduate women attending weekly two-hour informational sessions on various aspects of investing. As part of the educational process, we are breaking the students into groups of five or six, where they will analyze a company within this industry. By the end of the semester they will draft an investment recommendation report, which they will present to the SWS Board. This exercise will serve as a brief introduction to the spring portion of our program, where interested women will be part of industry groups who research companies and make in-depth formal reports to the SWS Board about which of these companies our fund should invest in. We will be creating a real stock portfolio in order to teach women how to invest with actual money.
We have selected a dedicated group of young women who are committed to educating themselves about investing. While the program is centered on the initiative of the mentees, we welcome your involvement and personal outreach to your mentees. If you ever have any questions or concerns about your mentees and their interactions with you, please feel free to contact us !
