Dear Colleagues,
At the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society during the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress held in Toronto in October 2015, it was decided to transfer its activities and funds to the new CCS affiliate Society called the Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Nuclear and CT Imaging.
We are in the process of fundraising for the new Society to support the infrastructure and costs of affiliate membership in the CCS, promotion of cardiovascular nuclear and CT imaging in Canada, development of a multi-modality imaging diploma training program for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and co-sponsorship of a highly successful cardiology resident imaging teaching program that has been held in Ottawa for years chaired by Dr. Ben Chow and Dr. Mike Froeschl.
A new Best Abstract Award and a Career Achievement Award for the Society are being developed for presentation at the Annual Awards Ceremony at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress.
The new Society is pleased that our application for a spotlight session has been accepted at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Montreal. This will take place on October 24, 2016 from 14:00 to 15:30 in debate format:Controversies in Cardiac Imaging: Which Test Best Predicts Outcome with CAD - Anatomy or Function?Three excellent speakers have agreed to participate arguing:
  • Anatomic imaging is best:Dr. J Leipsic, UBC, Canada Research Chair in Advanced Cardiac Imaging and President of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography
  • Functional imaging is best:
Dr. J C Tardif, Montreal Heart Institute, Canada Research Chair in Translational and Personalized Medicine, University of Montreal Endowed Research Chair in Atherosclerosis
  • Which test is best?
Dr. P Douglas,Ursula Geller Professorship for Research in Cardiovascular Disease, Duke Clinical Research Institute
Previously, the society did not charge a membership fee, but this also makes it hard to keep an accurate mailing list of interested participants. This year, there will be a nominal membership fee for the new Society both to support its activities and to develop a list of committed members. Please note that there is no membership fee for trainees but please register.
We hope that you will join or renew your membership and come to the Annual General Meeting for the new Society at the Canadian Cardiovascular CongressonOctober 24, 2016 at 17:00 in Montreal, QC. Following the Annual General Meeting,Dr. Pam Douglas from Duke University and author of the Promise Study, will also present the Dr. Robert Burns Lecture on 'Imaging studies in CAD'.
Sincerely,

Ross A Davies, MD, FRCP(C), FACC, FCCS,
President, Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Nuclear and CT Imaging

Dr. Robert J. Burns Memorial Lecture and CSCNCTI AGM will take place Monday, October 24, 2016 at 17:00
This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Robert J. Burns, a close friend and mentor to many of the leaders in Nuclear Cardiology in Canada who died in 1999. Robert was an outstanding clinician as well as an authority in nuclear cardiology, recognized both nationally and internationally for his investigation of new imaging agents and innovative protocols. He created an outstanding clinical nuclear cardiology laboratory that now bears his name at the University Health Network of Toronto, and formed an enterprise to use nuclear cardiology procedures as endpoints in large multi-centred trials.
Robert was the initiator and the founding President of the Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society. He was dedicated to his family and had a love for teaching the physicians of the future. This lectureship was created to recognize the integrity, thoughtfulness, honesty and clear thinking of Robert J. Burns and of those who through their work allow nuclear cardiology to flourish and be useful in patient management.
