Q Do I have to pass this assignment?

Q Can I copy other people’s work?

A No. The work that you produce must be your own work and you may be asked to sign a declaration to say that the work is your own. You should never copy the work of other candidates or allow others to copy your work. Any information that you use from other sources, e.g. books, newspapers, professional journals, the Internet, must be clearly identified and not presented as your own work.

Q Can I work in a group?

A Yes. However, if you work in a group at any stage you must still produce work that shows your individual contribution.

Q How should I present my work?

A You can present your work in a variety of ways, eg hand-written, word-processed, on video. However, what you choose should be appropriate to the task(s). For some work, e.g. presentations, coaching sessions, role-play, work experience, you will need to provide proof that you completed the task(s). A witness statement or observation sheet could be used for this. If you are unsure, check with your tutor.

Q When I have finished, what do I need to hand in?

A You need to hand in the work that you have completed for each task. Do not include any draft work or handouts unless these are asked for. When you hand in your work make sure that it is labelled, titled and in the correct order for assessing.

Q How will my work be assessed?

A Your work will be marked by an assessor in your centre. The assessor will mark the work using the assessment objectives and the grade descriptors in the qualification specification.

Health matters

The Local Health Service has published the following article in their monthly magazine.

Your college have been asked by the local health service to investigate the need for a new health centre within the college.

You have been asked to research the patterns and trends within your local area and to apply these to the different views of health and ill-health.

Task 1: Sociological perspectives

Assessment Criteria P1

Write an essay that describes the perspectives as well as explaining how they view health and ill-health.

Sociological Perspectives

·  Interpretative perspectives (micro level):

o  Symbolic interactionism; including ‘labelling’,

o  Social constructionism

·  Structuralist perspectives (macro level):

o  Functionalism including the ‘sick role’,

o  Marxism,

o  Feminism.

In your explanations try to include the following key concepts:

·  Social institutions: (e.g. family, school, workplace, health and care services)

·  Social groupings: (e.g. gender, social class, ethnicity, age, locality)

·  Attitudes, norms, customs, ideologies,

·  Primary socialisation,

·  Secondary socialisation.

The evidence for this will be:

·  a written report explaining the principal sociological perspectives (P1)

Task 2: Approaches to health and ill health

Assessment Criterion P2 and M1

Prepare a booklet that explains each of the sociological approaches to health and ill health. The booklet could be aimed at people who are likely to visit the new health centre. The booklet should also include similarities and differences between the medical and social model.

·  Definitions of health:

o  The World Health Organisation definition

o  The medical model,

o  The social model

·  Concepts of health:

o  Personal responsibility for health

o  Health as the absence of illness

o  The illness-wellness continuum

·  Concepts of ill-health:

o  Ill health as a disease,

o  Ill health as a disorder,

o  Ill health as a subjective feeling of illness.

The evidence for this task will be:

·  a booklet that explains different sociological approaches to health and ill health (P2)

·  your booklet should also compare the medical and the social models of health (M1)


Task 3: Influencing factors

Assessment Criterion P3, M2 and D1

Your final task for the health service is to research patterns and trends and produce a report of your findings. You will need to explain the patterns and trends you have found.

You should also outline and compare each of the sociological explanations for these patterns and trends.

Finally, include an evaluation of the measurements of patterns and trends.

·  Measurements of health and ill-health:

o  Disease incidence,

o  disease prevalence,

o  morbidity rates,

o  mortality rates

·  Evaluation of measurements of health and illness:

o  the clinical iceberg,

o  suitability of method,

o  validity,
