- Understand the safety risks of using the internet.
- Learn safety strategies to protect yourself while using the internet.
- Realize the importance of protecting personal privacy on the internet.
Overview
- In this lesson, students will explore various aspects of internet safety. Though video, class discussion, and activities students will learn about internet dangers and the importance of protecting personal privacy while using the internet. They will practice distinguishing safe and unsafe online situations.
Materials
- Promethean Board or White/Chalk Board
- Internet access
- Internet Safety video:
- Worksheet: Safe or Not Safe
- Chart Paper per group
- Markers
- Pencils
Time
- 30 minutes
Activity Sequence
INTRODUCTION/HOOK
- Ask students, “What does the word safety mean?” Then ask “What are things you do to stay safe?” List answers on the whiteboard and discuss.
- Ask students if they think it is wise to talk to strangers? Why or Why not? What about talking to strangers on the internet? Safe or not Safe? Write answers on whiteboard and discuss. (2 minutes)
ACTIVITY
1.Show students the video “Internet Safety” (4 minutes)
2. Discuss what they learned from the video. Ask students to talk about some internet safety issues that they saw on the video. Were these things they knew before or “new to them.” (2 minutes)
3.Tell students that they will be working in groups to explore ideas on internet safety. Then break the students up into four groups of 4 or five. (2 minutes)
4.Handout the worksheet “Safe or Unsafe” to students and go over directions. Explain to students that they are to look at each situation on the sheet and as a group decide if it is safe or unsafe. Then, the group should decide what action should be taken next. Their answers should be written on the worksheet. Explain that after the first part is finished they are to complete the tasks at the bottom of the page by deciding answers as a group and listing their answers on the chart paper they will be receiving. (2 minutes)
5.Allow time for students to work together. Pass out the chart paper and monitor their progress. ( 12 minutes)
6.Have students share their charts and internet safety pledges. (4 minutes)

- Review Essential Questions (2 minutes)
OPTIONAL EXTENSION SUGGESTION/HOME LEARNING
- Have students visit FBI Cyber Surf Island for videos, puzzles and games on internet safety:
- Design an internet safety rules poster.
- Have students share their Internet Safety Pledge with their parents.
