Institute of Sound Vibration Research
Project Work - Code of Practice
Our Responsibility
- To propose a range of suitable research projects from which you may indicate your preferences.
- To allocate research projects fairly taking into account your declared preferences.
- To allocate an appropriately qualified supervisor, who will develop with you the allocated research project.
- To allocate a deputy supervisor to deputise during short periods of absence (PG programmes).
- To arrange for an alternative supervisor should your allocated supervisor be absent for a period of more than four weeks.
- Provide you with information and guidance on the regulations for carrying out the project and the examination process.
- To ensure the provision of research and related skills training.
- To have any complaints procedure in place should you feel dissatisfied with any aspect of your supervision.
- To have a clear procedure for changing your supervisor should the relationship with your supervisor break down.
The Supervisor's Responsibilities
- To advise you on suitable topics and guide your selection of preferences.
- To give guidance about the nature of research, understanding what is expected, the plan of the research project, the relevant literature and sources, research techniques and analysis, and ethical considerations.
- To agree regular meetings with you and set aside adequate time to discuss progress.
- To help you consider the safety and ethical implications of your work.
- If there is an absence of more than four weeks, your supervisor will arrange alternative supervision during his or her absence. This will be done in consultation with you and the School.
- To warn you of inadequate progress or standards of your work below that generally expected.
- To give general advice on the preparation of the research report and to comment on drafts of parts of the report. The supervisor is not expected to undertake substantial editing or revision of draft work. Ultimately you are responsible for your work and your supervisor's responsibility is to give you guidance.
Your Responsibility
- To indicate your preference of research topic from those suggested or based on your own ideas.
- To develop the allocated research project with your supervisor and to work on that topic.
- To discuss with your supervisor the type of guidance you find most helpful.
- To motivate the work using your own initiative.
- To agree with your supervisor a schedule of meetings, to attend such meetings, and to inform your supervisor how you can be contacted.
- To produce work in accordance with an agreed schedule.
- To familiarise yourself with the School's written guidelines on preparing and submitting the report.
- To carry out your research in accordance with the policy of the School and relevant ethical standards.
- To carry out your research with regard to good health and safety practices, including risk assessment.
- If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of your supervisor arrangement, you should discuss the dissatisfaction initially with your supervisor and then with the module or programme coordinator as soon as possible. If such discussions do not produce a satisfactory outcome, you may submit the final written statement to the head of School outlining your reasons for this dissatisfaction.
- Please note that you are responsible for your work and that the role of the supervisor is to provide guidance and advice.
- Please also note that all research outputs arising from student projects remain the property of the University of Southampton. If you wish to exploit those outputs, you may only do so with explicit permission.
