Miniature Stage:
Materials:
  • Cardboard
  • Art supplies (eg. Tape or glue, construction paper, colored pencils, pens)
  • Pipe cleaners or wire
Create a miniature “stage” from cardboard to show the setting (a specific scene) from the story. Use the art supplies to create the stage and the pipe cleaners to create the main characters. / Picture Dictionary

Place several sheets of drwaring paper toether. Fold the paper in half and staple through the paper on the fold to create a booklet. Create a picture dictionary using at least 20 words from the book. (Use your reading journal to help you select words)
Write each word at the top of a separate page. Draw a detailed, color picture to represent the meaning of each word.
Poem:
Materials:
  • Paper and pencil/ pen
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • 8 ½ by 11 in. cardstock
Write an original poem that describes the setting, at least one character, and the problem/conflict of the story. The poem should be at least 15 lines long and does not need to rhyme.
Create a small poster on the cardstock with the poem written neatly and decorate the poster with a border.

Paint a picture of your favorite scene from the book.

Cut 4 assorted shapes (square, diamond, circle, triangle) from construction paper and white paper so that the white paper is framed by the construction paper. Illustrate and explain on a separate shape each of the following elements:
The setting
The main characters
The plot
The title and author
Glue the illustrations and explanations onto the shapes and then tape each separate shape to a piece of string. Tie each string to the coat hanger to create the mobile / Time Line:

Glue sheets of construction paper together to make one long sheet, List the main events in the story in chronological order according to a plot diagram. Include a visual or drawing for each event listed on the timeline.
Comic Strip:
Materials

Create a comic strip about the characters in the story. Include a section for each part of the plot. Use word bubbles to indicate when the characters are speaking. / Dolls:

  • Index cards
Pick a character from the story. Create a doll for that character. On the Index card, write a description about the character.
Photo Album:
Materials
  • Drawing paper
  • Stapler
  • Colored pencils, crayons or markers
Fold a few pieces of paper in half. Staple through all pages on the fold. Make a photo album of at least 10 pictures for one of the book’s characters. Make sure to have a title for your album and a description or caption for each picture. / Television:
Materials:
  • Medium sized cardboard box
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Construction paper and drawing paper
  • Colored pencils, markers or crayons
  • Wooden dowels or paper towel rolls
Cut out the front of the cardboard box. Cut large slits in both sides of the box. Tape pieces of construction paper together lengthwise. On the drawing paper, draw at least 5 scenes, one for each part of the plot. Glue or tape drawing paper to construction paper to create a background. Place the construction paper in the box and put each end through a slit on the side of the box. Tape each end of the construction paper to the dowels or paper towel rolls. Turn dowels to chance the scenes.

Diorama:
Materials

  • Index cards
  • Glue/tape
Turn a shoe box on its side. Use construction paper, colored pencils, crayons or markers, to make a scene from the story inside the shoe box. Describe the scene on the index card and attach the index card to the back of the shoe box with glue or tape. / Model

Choose a scene from the book. Use clay or plaster to construct the scene. Glue the clay or plaster on to the cardboard.

Flannel Story Board:

Use flannel pieces to create characters, scenery, and props in a scene from the story. Place the flannel board pieces on the flannel board as you tell the scene to the class.

Make a booklet folding the piece of cardstock into thirds. ON the first section, write the book title, the author’s name, and your name and then draw a picture that describes the book. On the next section write a summary about the book. On the third section, write an advertisement to sell the book to potential readers. Include a drawing for your advertisement.
Diary:

Fold pieces of drawing paper in half and staple through the papers on the fold. Choose a character from the book. Write a minimum of 10 diary entries, as if you were the character. Have the character comment on significant events in the story and thoughts about other characters. / Shadow Boxes:

Cut a quarter sized hole in the side of a shoe box. Make three dimensional figures out of construction paper and crayons or markers. Glue the figures to the inside bottom of the box. Replace the lid and look at the scene though the hole. Write a description of the scene on an index card. Glue the index card to the top of the box.
Collage:

Cut out magazine pictures that represent different scenes from the story. Glue the pictures to a poster board. Write the title of the book at the top of your collage. / Poster

Choose your favorite scene from the book. Use the paint and art supplies to make a poster that describes the scene. Make the poster one, two or three dimensional. Make sure to include the book title and author on the poster.
Word List:

Make a list of at least ten (10) new vocabulary words from the story. They should be unusual, or interesting and not any of the words used for the reading journal. After each word, write the dictionary definition and draw a picture to describe each word. Use each word in its own original sentence.
